Had a VW and my X type had EGR faults and no codes logged.
EGR was sticking open on them both. VW would not start, X type very much down on power and smoking.

I used a company in Banbury called Angel Tuning.
I'll be cleaning the EGR and throttle body on Monday, even if it doesn't fix the issue it won't be doing any harm.

Your right about the fault logging but I was talking about blanking the egr. When you do that you have to unplug the gray stepper motor connection which is what puts the pending code on there

Thanks for the tip, I'll do that too.

Quick update:
Got back from bank holiday adventures earlier than expected, so made use of the daylight hours and whipped the throttle body off.
The inside had a 1-2mm layer of soot and oil residue, and the new sensor was already lightly covered in oil (did a test drive around the car park after fitting!).
One of the butterfly valves was stiff and stuck open, so I cleaned that up and it now moves more freely.
Inlet manifold was thick with gunk and soot and took a lot of scraping to remove.
Followed with a healthy squirt of brake cleaner and dig around with a rag, it's looking far better but it's obvious that the EGR is causing issues here.

I did attempt to remove the EGR pipe at the manifold end, but one of the torx heads was rusty and started to round off, so I'm leaving it alone for now.

My Blanking plate is in it's way and should be a simple job to fit, so I just need to re-assemble the manifold and test drive in the morning.

Will unplugging the EGR act the same as blocking it (I.E prevent it from opening) until the blanking plate arrives? I will test it when connected and removed to see if there's a difference.

New update, new problem..
Car Throttle body is now back together after a clean.
EGR pipe was removed and cleaned up a bit.
Put back together and still smoking.
Attempted to run some Diesel purge through the system, but car stalled before getting prime on it, and after reconnecting the fuel lines it refused to start and ran the battery down.
Now the car doesn't smoke or drive. Really getting fed up of this car now.

Any further advice would be welcome. Thanks.

Is your EGR blanked off now or not?

Latest update after a day of tinkering.
Car now runs, a jump start sorted the issues above.
Have driven the car with EGR connected and disconnected and there is no difference in performance or smoke levels.
The car is much happier idling with the EGR disconnected, as it's lumpy and shakes the car with it plugged back in. I monitored the RPM's using a diagnostic app and watched the speedo and the revs remained constant, but the shaking/juddering feeling was pretty strong.

So, I'm wondering if the EGR is so badly clogged that it is constantly in the 'OPEN' position, and disconnecting it isn't making a difference as it won't move anyway?
Looking at the inlet manifold, there is plenty of soot and gunk recirculating.
Any thoughts?
