Default S40 Diagnostic Equipment

OK so after having spent the past few days trawling the net in search of some diagnostic software, I have came to the conclusion that I am not getting anywhere. My question is simple. Is it possible to get a USB cable and software that will read and reset codes on a 2003 diesel S40? The last 3 diagnostic readers would not communicate with my ECU. Vag/Vadis and some other chinese made device.

Volvo are looking for £72 for a diagnostic check. I'd rather buy my own so I can take my time to understand and read into faults as well as fix them. I have seen a lot on ebay claiming to work, but there are a lot of contradictory reviews. Anybody got any recommendations?

Cheers

if you were to look on say ebay for a "volvo Dice" unit,, not the fluffy ones you put in the car,, and have a read around the forums for "dice",,

the cost of the genuine device is £1800 and thats just for the cable, the subscription to VIDA comes in at £7000 a year. so the cheaper knock off is a good deal. i have just bought a bluetooth elm device from ebay £12.99 and use torque software on my android phone to read ecu codes and it works a treat. Only thing it wont do SRS and ABS. the torque app is around £2.99. its by no means a pro tools setup, but for the DIY guy its perfect

If you are after the clearing of codes and happen to have an android phone, have you tried the paid version of Torque?
