Tow Bar wanted for 1988 340 saloon
I recently bought a 1988 1.7 340 GLE saloon & am looking for a tow bar preferably with electrics for just a trailer. I gather that a hatchback one will not fit.
One in good condition would be nice but I can appreciate that parts are a bit thin on the ground - I should have gone for a car with one fitted! If there`s one out there for a reasonable price, I could pick it up if it`s not too far from Harwich in Essex, or would pay postage if it could be sent.Thanks. |

More saloon tow bar.
I keep seeing that the hatch tow bar will not fit the saloon, but no one explains where the two differ. Is the cross beam that goes under the bumper the same for the two models? Is the piece that bolts under the boot a different length to reflect the different lengths of the two models?
I`m asking because I keep wondering if it would be a relatively easy job to convert a hatch one to fit a saloon rather than start from scratch & make one myself? |

I would have thought the saloon one is just a bit longer, if this is the case I don't see why you couldn't just weld in an extra piece for the length. Also Dai at classicswede had one on his website for a saloon the last time I looked.

Still more saloon tow bar
I have tried Dai & he said he had a tow bar, but after nearly two months of emails & waiting, I`m getting nowhere nearer to getting a delivered price from him - I just give up with him! Is he always so bad with customers?
So, if anyone has one, I`m still in the market for a saloon towbar, as it`s still too cold to go down the garage & try to make a hatch one fit! |

Towbar now sorted.
I thought that I would just round off this thread by saying that I bought a new hatch towbar off eb*y for just over £30 & have now modified it to fit my saloon.
It didn`t need a lot changing, just the tube that sticks out the back needed lengthening by about 3 1/2 inches, so I put a longer/larger bit of square tube over the existing one after I cut the flange off the end & then welded it all back together. Job done. |
