Question Engine swap information wanted

Hello from New Zealand again. A friend of mine has caught the 240 bug of me and has bought one of my spare 245's. He has also bought a 245 parts car. The 245 he bought off me is a 77 with a B21A engine and a BW55 auto box in it. His parts car is a 79 245 with a B19A engine and a M45 manual gearbox. What he wants to know is if he can remove the auto box and fit the manual one in instead still using the B21A engine? Dose the flywheel fit onto the crankshaft or is there a difference in the mounting boss?

Hey mate , i'm from down under as well but in Auckland. I just did a similar conversion on my 1982 244GLE with a B19E mated to a BW55. It has now got an M47 from a 1987 240GLT with a B230E. The only thing your mate would have to worry about is the manual car's flywheel, as it differs, and of course the pedal box, driveshaft, clutch fluid line , gearbox crossmember, and neutral safety switch wiring from the manual car. In my car i also needed the speedo and differential off the donor car because the speedo sensor is on the diff and electric and so is the speedo itself (So he need not worry about that). The only modification on my car that i had to do that i thought should be standard between auto and manual cars was that i had to drill a hole in the firewall/bulkhead panel to be able to bolt up the clutch master cylinder to the clutch pedal.

Thumbs up

Hey thanks for that information. You say that the flywheel differs is there a problem fitting it on the crankshaft?

No, the manual flywheel should bolt right on to the crank, the bolt holes for the torque converter is differently set out if i remember correctly to where the clutch plate i mounted. Also your mate might find it easier to actually remove the whole engine and gearbox as a whole and do the swap while it is out. Makes it a whole lot easier.

I'll pass on that information to him. Also if you need any parts for your Volvo give us yell. I have wrecked about four Volvo's over the last five years or so and have quite a collection of bits and pieces.

You will need to use the correct clutch plate for the gearbox input shaft. The earlier cars had fewer but courser spines, so you need the clutch plate appropriate to the donor box, not the one listed for the manual version of the year you are mating it to. At least, that's the case in the UK.
