Default oil mileage

Hey chaps, I hope you all had a good, or at least, manageable christmas.

I have a question, and it's not solely for the V50 but diesels in general, but.....

I now drive a 130 mile a day commute in my 2.0D, now, do I do oil changes more frequently or less? I was always told that short journeys in a diesel ruins the oil and long journeys keep it in better nick.

What's fact and what are old wives tales?

It ALL depends on your budget and how much/long you want to keep the car.

In reality if you are going to keep it 3 years do it to the service interval.

I have an XC90 which is 1yr or 18,000 miles. I service it with oil every 6k.

I do this because I will keep it until it is run into the ground, the price of genuine oil, crush washer and filter is way less than a tank of diesel and because I enjoy servicing and such to keep it on the road.

At 120,000 miles I have never had a breakdown or any expense at all and I expect at least the same again.

For me I would get a trolley jack, axle stands and then do it myself for very very little money (don’t forget I have a D5 with large oil capacity - and mine is still dirt cheap to service!)
