He actually confirmed the total £3k pricing of the repair, including the cost of the head was about right. One other option would be to fit a used/recon engine. Purchase cost on Ebay being £600-£800. Fitting cost unsure. |

For what it's worth, I have the 't' shirt on this one.
Mines my '03 so really not worth much, but I like it. An incompetent garage screwed up my calender head (had it welded) and had to pay to get the car away after 8 werks and moved to a reputable indie. I could not ask this garage to try and fix the existing bodge so ordered a replacement engine from a breaker understandin that in the replacement, engine mounts, chankshaft oil seals, core plugs etcetc would all be checked/replaced of needed. Engine - £450, recon turbo £280, engine mounts, oil, antifreeze, AC regas, total labour £1700. I know far more than car is worth, but now 7 months and 5000 miles later, all fine. Major recommendation, make sure your garage is competent! John l |

I guess the question is do you want to move forward or waste any more of your life looking backwards?
I'd get the car recovered a.s.a.p. and over to someone else more competent and honest. FYI becuase D5 engines, especially the 163 E3 units, are so reliable they are as cheap as chips second hand. If cylinder head work is required it's usually cheaper these days to drop in another lump unless yours is particularly low mileage. An engine, timing belt kit, labour be cheaper than then head work, lots more labour and a head gasket kit. The D5 is relatively easy to lift out of the XC90 as there's loads of room.
