Default Loose wiper arms on spindle

Hi, before Winter and the rains come I would like to put a screw through the wiper arm to secure it to the spindle. Should I screw through the side or the top into the spindle.I think that a dome head screw into the top would look better but would the side be more secure?

Hi

I did mine a while ago from the side and it worked well until I overhauled the system with new cogs from brookhouse. I also used allen key grub screws which made the job very neat, be careful not to drill too far in so as not to damage the small splined wiper shaft.

Hope that helps

Gavin

arcturus;

...both are possible solutions...I have drilled and taped (particularly carefully!) into the drive shaft...(it could clearly be done even neater, and with screw less prominent and protrusive with a flat-head screw):

...and I have also seen a grubscrew (set-screw here!) solution (but it looked a bit too "rustic" for me):

You may want to consider going down this route. https://www.carbuilder.com/uk/135mm-...QaAn2oEALw_wcB
These are the same as Land Rover series models and Defender. You may need to make a puller to get your old ones off. I do remember you mentioning that you had your wiper arms thrown off in the rain.
I think that Mike Dudek has these as Volvo specific but I don't know if they are indeed any thing special. They may be the same as the ones that Brookhouse has. These are just an interference fit with no grub screw. Obviously best pressed on with the mechanism out of the car. Fix with Loctite. Brookhouse has 2 spindle sizes. Yours may be the 6mm ones?

In that second picture that Ron posted, the owner could have easily used a shorter screw, or cut it down with a Dremmel tool to sit flush or just below the surface. You can get those screws with a recessed hex head that you would use an Allen Wrench on to tighten.

Otherwise, I have no practical advice.

I have some Loctite 2400 thread lock. Do y'all think that it might be worth trying before drilling spindle and screwing?

So after measuring it seems that the wiper arm coupling lock clip is at 9.5mm depth whilst the shaft is at 11mm depth so the clip won't lock in. No idea where I could obtain replacement arm with correct depth. None of the spec's I have looked at give these dimensions, only diameter of shaft

I've just measured an arm, which coincidently came out of a collection of early PV bits and the clip to bottom of the socket is 11.4mm. The diameter of the splined bit is difficult to measure but is about 13.75mm. Total arm length as it would fitted to the car (tensioned against the spring) is 32mm. Spoon end fitting for the blade. It's a Trico. I don't see anything unusual here and think this is just a standard arm. I'm sure it would fit my Amazon OK. The spring clip isn't that strong and I've never had problems removing an arm even if a screwdriver has come in handy now and then due to the main pressure spring strength.
What is the length of the splined ferrule on the car? Obviously the male and female splines both have to be good enough to keep themselves mated but the big spring is usually good enough to ensure that.

I have an old arm and the size is as you say but the spring has rusted out. The newer ones have shorter female splines. I don't think that the metal Trico arm are still available,at least not the last time I looked.

If you want it you can have this one for postage. It will need a clean up as it has been sprayed with satin black. About half of that is missing but as it's on to stainless it will clean off easy. I have your address.
Anything else you're looking for?
