So i have run the inbuild disgnostics and the HDD is reporting an error as in the DVD disk unit - considering that both were working just fine prior to the update im assuming that the update somehow has buggered the system?

To be fair I did interrupt the update as the battery charger weas not maintaining the power level so this coyuld be the cause?

How can i hard reboot the system os is the HDD crashed?

Might be difficult to recover from

Options are:

1. Brand new unit at very high cost

2. Use 2nd hand donor nav unit to repair yours: replace first your DVD mech with the donor mech and see what happens, then replace your HDD with the donor HDD.

The nav is coded to your car (well, the car knows the serial number of the nav). The coding is stored in flash memory on the nav circuit board, so do not throw away your nav no matter what.

Hi Swiss, so if i replace the HDD it will juyst boot or will it need to be coded? Where is the HDD located?

Also, is there any way i can do a hard boot to restart the system? Reset the HDD?

The HDD is physically inside the nav computer, which is under the left hand front seat

The system shuts down completely when the car turns off. So a full reboot happens at every power-on after a sleep state.

The HDD must be preformatted and preloaded with OS and data. You cannot fit an empty HDD. If you buy an empty HDD, you must clone a known good HDD to the empty one. Google. Some people have tried.

I’m going to remove the DVD player and disassemble to see whether there is any crime/dirt internally. I’ll give it a clean and refit to see whether that might fix the issue.

Pretty fed up about this as the system worked perfectly before the update and it appears that I have managed to break it!

Just another job to do!

Means you stopped the update or you simply "pulled the plug"? If the latter, I'd say you ruined it, sorry. In that case my bet would be on a new HDD...

But you haven't answered one question: are you sure, your discs are 100% genuine Volvo? I wouldn't know about any dealership, that would simply give out new discs... So my guess is still on a cracked version of the nav software. And if so, there is no way to help you, as nobody knows, what changes have been made by the hacker. So, are the discs original, yes or no?

The disks will be copies (of originals) that have been "written" or "burned" onto blank disks rather than "pressed"

The drive either can read them or it can't - depends on the quality of the copy and the effectiveness of the laser read head.

There is no "cracking" or "software hacking" involved, just someone with a genuine set of discs making copies (I don't believe there is any form of copy protection on the originals) and selling them on.

The problem has almost certainly come from abandoning the update mid flow with a power fail.

When I updated mine this was specifically warned against, so I did it while I was driving.

Cheers

Dave

That's true for most of the DVDs that are sold for example via eBay, they are just copies. I just checked my "standard" location for such downloads, there is at least one version that has a changed splash screen (=something changed).

As I said, I do suspect the break as well. In the *.txt to the download (and that is an illegal dl!) is explicitly stated:
Quote:
Update take about 210 min .. first insert DISC 1, wait about 2 hours .. than insert DISC 2, wait till it finish. Insert again DISC 1 and you are ready.
I suggest driving the car during the update process or connect it to battery charger
What I would try is cloning the HDD and take a look, if there are some bad sectors, that could be corrected during cloning. But that is far fetched...

@NMB
Have you tried downloading one of these versions and burn it yourself (if you still have a DVD burner )? Maybe the old trick burning it very, very slow helps.

Bought a disk on eBay - not original - I have complained and they sent replacement disks that have the same outcome.

With the HDD reporting an error and the DVD whirring, I'm assuming the HDD is dead...

BUT, i can still access the maps and use the sat nav system and routplan anywhere in teh UK...
