my v40 revs by itself should I rename it christine ?
Hi I'm new to this site and am wondering if anyone might be able to help with a problem I have with my v40 ?
It has started all of a sudden it will just rev up to about 3000 rpm and then sit revving .the throttle is not stuck open ! A man plugged it in and first said it was the cam sensor then said it was the mass air flow sensor but isn't sure either will cure the problem ! The other thing is it gets hot now ! Any thoughts weLcomed !!! Its a 1.6 v reg petrol that has done 97 k Last edited by sadwhiteestate; Jul 31st, 2012 at 10:42. Reason: add more detail |

Does the temperature gauge go up when it starts revving? If it does, do you turn it off and then try to restart it? If so, then it is the thermostat. I had it on my 1.6 V40 a few years ago where it just stuck closed and wouldn't open until the car cooled down which was a pain as I spent most of my day at the side of the road waiting to cool down every time it went

Try unplugging the MAF sensor and start the engine and let us know what happens
Also you might want to post in the right S40/V40 only section, where you will get many more responses. http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=17

I would expect the car to idle a bit rougher with the MAF disconnected, but did it drop to 800-1000? If yes we could be looking at a failed MAF.
Have you tried cleaning the ICV(idle control valve)?: http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=80435 I can ask the mods to move this thread to http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=17 with your permission and you will get many more responses.

I know my brother had that problem in his 99 1.8 S40 and, in his case, it was the MAF. That was about 3 years and 30,000 miles ago
