Default Steering Wheel embellisher.

XC70, my2010.
Four spoke steering wheel is fitted with a “silk metal” embellisher, the two lower “spokes” of which partly wrap around the rim of the steering wheel. The “silk metal” finish on one of the spokes is beginning to lift off leaving a sharp edge which on occasions catches the driver’s fingers. First noticed when a finger received a cut. As time progresses this will obviously become worse.
Has anyone experienced this? and so, were they able to resolve it without buying a complete new replacement embellisher.
Volvo parts webstore shows the embellisher as part no. 31390457.

Yes, I had this problem on my 2011 S80 about 5-6 years ago; just spoke to dealer and they swapped out under warranty, quick and simple job apparently.

Unlikely that Volvo would cover it when your car is so far out of warranty but may be worth a try - Volvo do tend to be pretty good at goodwill outside of warranty for safety-related issues.

I’m considering trying to very carefully insert some superglue under the loose edge to prevent it lifting any more. Trouble with superglue, I’ve found that sometimes it is excellent, job done, but sometimes it just doesn’t work.

Carefully inserted miniscule amount of superglue underneath the lifted edge. Tried to press edge down but it didn’t want to stick. Once the glue had hardened carefully sliced off the lifted edge with a very thin sharp razor blade. Appears to be ok at present, time and use will tell.

I also suffered this fault on my 2012. Haven't cut myself on it but it did wound my pride. I really had thought the component was metal! I also sliced off the offending edge and it is smooth again. It's a bit late now, but if I'd have cut myself, I'd have taken the bleeding finger straight to the Volvo dealer and demanded that they fix a "dangerous" fault on the car!
