Default Thirsty euro 5 D5 (205)

My recently acquired D5 seems to like a good drink of diesel. According to the computer it’s barely reaching 30mpg (9l/100km) checked an it is set to U.K. units. That’s driving like miss daisy with the (adaptive) cruise set to 70.
Since buying it I’ve given it an oil change with the correct spec oil and filter. Done the gearbox oil, checked air filter - it’s clean but aftermarket, so have genuine filter on the way. Noticed the pipe exiting the turbos is soft and squishy so got a new one on the way.
There’s some oil on the outside of the turbo air intake pipe, but I can’t work out for the life of me how to get that one off to inspect it.
Vida shows no engine related fault codes.

Anyone any other ideas on improving its thirst?

The car is a 2010MY geartronic with 170k on it and runs well.

Have you calculated what it’s actually doing, or are you relying on the computer?

Thanks for the suggestions;

Brakes are not binding, tyre pressures are spot on and with brand new tyres.
The car goes like a scolded cat (for a diesel) when given the chance.

Figures are off the computer, going to try and brim it again today (used just over half a tank) to see what it's actually using. Just not getting much mileage in at the minute. Reset it yesterday when we went for a day out, mostly 60-70 on the motorway, and it's showing 30.3mpg

I've no idea about how I can check for DPF regen? Vida live data?

Whilst I have no experience with your car's model,Im not surprised in the slightest.... Welcome to the world of Dpf and egr's..
All this emission control stuff does take its toll on fuel economy.

I'm not particularly worried about the amount it's doing as I was actually looking for a petrol model but this one popped up with a lot of nice toys in it! Only do about 4-5000 miles a year in the car, although the runs it does get will keep a DPF happy- checked that before committing to the diesel.

More concerned that something is unhealthy somewhere that I've missed that may lead to longer term issues.

I noticed when researching a P3 myself that there is a notable difference between Auto (mine & yours) and the manual variant MPG. Book figure is around 32 for the auto and high 30s for the manual.

I have found similar for mine (185) OBC is showing around 28-30, real world is 25-27 - although its not having regular long runs.

You can view the DPF status in VIDA, ECM - Advanced i think (it will give current soot filter content and any messages about failed regens etc - note: in this screen not in the 'Fault Trace' section).

Think this sums up the issue....V70 auto's are heavy on fuel...you might try manually using the geartronic box to see if it improves things.. I have always ran manuals and get almost 10mpg more than most auto guys claim..
That said only 30 mpg on a 60-70 motorway spin is pants....I can get that from my AWD R..
If you are looking for an issue.... how about worn injectors over fueling but not enough to cause a error code/MIL...
..but don't have a clue how you'd prove them...
Good luck
Cheers Bob

Although it wasn't intended to, the thread is running almost parallel to one I've got in the P3 section :-)

Anyway, the soot level in the DPF has dropped from 27g to 0.1g, so I'd guess it has been regenerating. Hopefully that explains the really pants mpg, although I want to properly check the inlet hose to the turbo as it's got oil on the outside (possible split?) and I can't for the life of me see how to get to the jubilee clip at the turbo side! I'll see what vida has to say on the matter haha.
