Default Collected our "new" Volvo today

First Volvo we have ever had. XC90 SE Sport Geartronic 2008 137,000 miles with a full service history and cambelt / WP change. I know it's old but I am quite surprised by the very solid quality and the very pleasant drive......plus it's no slouch either.

I was also quite pleased to be able to wake up the old GSM integrated phone - put a SIM into it and it works absolutely perfectly.

Just trying to work out how to use the satnav and audio system now, and as for the parking brake, never seen such a strange setup before, but works pretty well!

So hopefully be able to join the High Milers Register sometime soon and looking forward to Volvo ownership. Not sure we will ever get it to BKV standard though but might give it a try sometime.

Congrats - you're in the right place now - there's more knowledge around this forum "than you can shake a stick at"

I'm approaching 70,000 on a '61 plate Exec that I bought on 45,000 3 years ago - didn't think I'd do many miles, as I have other vehicles (Harley and Smart Cabrio) but the XC90 is so nice to drive and - as you say - no slouch.

Enjoy!

Cheers

Dave

I have a MY2009 with identical setup (stereo, nav, phone)

My local phone provider has sentenced the 900/1800 GSM network to death by end of 2020... but I have one other phone provider that promises to run GSM 1800 a bit longer...

One of the first things you should look at doing is getting the nav maps up to date. You can view the map version and the OS version in the nav About screen.

Hope our networks work for the forseeable future !! - I just put a PAYG O2 SIM with some credit on it, in the tray and it recognised it right away and just works, brilliant to have an old style car phone!
The nav maps, luckily, were recently updated by the dealer I bought it from - disk 2 is in the glovebox with the owners manuals.

Now to work out how to use the sat nav....at least it's manual is present as well, as well as the remote.

I had lined up a few cars to view, there were 2 R-Designs, one a 2011MY but with 184,000 miles, all much the same price, and a very cheap T6 - but my partner just loved this one and as it is her car, bought to replace the sadly now gone BMW X5 4.8is Le Mans, which let go of its coolant with her on the motorway and blew the engine a few weeks ago........I sealed the deal on it.

I drive an e70 BMW X5 40d MSport MY2012 with 108,000 miles on it which I (still) love, but next one might well be a Volvo..........

Hi Condor,

Nice car, similar age and mileage to mine (134,000 mile early 2009 R Design, owned from new by my Dad and passed along to me).

If it's been maintained properly at either a decent main dealer or marque specialist then they last very well indeed. Seriously big mileages are possible for those that are maintained properly. The problem is that they're not cheap cars to run, and not the sort of car you can maintain on the cheap, they simply cost what they cost to keep them in top fettle - once you've accepted that then you're onto a winner. Mine was a £45,000 car in 2009, equivalent to 60 odd gees now, and I do wonder why some people buy them if they baulk at the running and repairs costs. A service, MOT (pass first go, no advisories) and new timing belt etc cost me £740 recently - if I wanted to pay less I could drive a Fiesta, bit then I wouldn't be driving in AWD luxury with 7 seats.

Funnily enough I use an O2 pre pay SIM in mine too. Mine also has a parrot kit which was fitted when new by the dealer, and the display is a very tidy fit in the small slot under the stereo, so my normal phone connects to that.

Glad you're enjoying your 90, and look forward to seeing you about the forum.

Absolutely the case with all these luxury cars - despite the huge depreciation, a £50,000 car still needs the maintenance it needs - and that doesn't drop in keeping with the resale value!!

I think many end up with owners who expect them to run on the sniff of an oil rag and minimal maintenance. I took a careful look at the service history before sealing the deal on ours, and it had been serviced regularly ever year since new, with the cam belt change noted at 108,000 and valves and pads / disks also noted in the past 2 years. Either main dealers or marque specialists
.
The small local dealer I bought it from is having a new drivers seat plastic side bracket (the one that surrounds the seat switches) fitted next week, and a new wheel arch rim - the black rim arch had been scraped, apparently the whole unit with arch has to be replaced.

I am going to have a reverse camera fitted I think - will perhaps try fitting one of those wireless numberplate units. My E70 BMW X5 with it's lovely parking camera has rather spoilt me and our shared driveway is very tight.
