Default MOT's Are Back .....

I heard this evening that as of 1 August 2020 the 6 month automatic MOT extension under the Covid19 Regulations will cease.

Now that's a bugger as the MOT on my 30 years old 745 goes during the first week of August and I had been counting on the change not reverting until 1 September.

No choice but I will have to re-assemble those replacement Nivomats!!

There had been talk of the 6 month extension scheme ending early because of fears that it would keep unroadworthy cars on the road as lockdown measures were lifted. Apparently a large number of cars fail first time, mostly for need of fairly trivial repairs.

I took advantage of it for one of my cars that was due an MOT in May. However, for the ones due in June and July it would have been more trouble than it was worth. One of them I only tax during the summer months and lay up over winter. The extension would have moved its MOT to 20 December! The other I primarily use in winter and having it off the road in January would have been unhelpful.

I wonder who came up with six months in the first place. It would have made more sense to make it twelve. I wonder how many people will now forget their MOT because it’s at a totally different time of year and out of sync with their service schedule.

It will be interesting how folk in the midst of local lockdowns cope. You can almost guarantee the Government departments have gone back to each working in glorious isolation again.

I don't know why they didn't do a staged reduction in the automatic MoT extension. For example, from 1st August, the extension would only be 5 months, 4 months from Spetmeber and so on. Would have made more sense rather than suddenly all those whose MoTs expire in Septemeber having to queue up alongside those whose MoTs expired in April, all trying to get tested at the same time.

What bothers me is that they're still panicking about a second wave of SARRS-2 aka CV-19, Kung Flu, bat-bug and all the other names given to it. Combine that with local lockdowns like Leicester and it'll be bedlam.

This should clarify things

There shouldn't be a big queue with all MOT's expiring as they have all had a 6 month extension from when the MOT expired. so any dates in April are now October, May will be November and so on.

From the gov.uk link above it looks as though if you are symptomatic or isolating, park your car on a public highway and have your MOT and/or road tax due after 1st August you're stuffed.

Like I said earlier, we're back into the glorious Government department silo working again that this country does so well.
