Unhappy problem getting out of 5th gear

All of a sudden I have a problem trying to get out of 5th gear and selecting another gear. The gear stick goes all 'sticky' and it has to be pursuaded to go into third or fourth. No problem going into 5th, just coming out. It is as if something is restricting it going from the centre of the gate leftwards. I've checked the clutch by pumping it (mentioned in another thread), and that didn't help. I've also checked for loose connections and obstacles under the air box, which may be impeding the cables, but all looks good.
Is it a new selector/gate I need under the gearstick, and how easy are they to fit?

Very strange... the issue has disappeared as fast as it appeared. Gearchange is back to being slick with no pinch points. I'm still going to check those linkages and cables Simmy.
