I have to say than when the cambelt broke on my 1998 V70 Tdi auto about four years ago, I found the content in PNuTs posts about this engine invaluable. There are some people on this forum who really do know the D5252 engine inside out and with the aid of their advice I was able to fix it myself.
Setting the camshaft timing isn't particularly difficult, but there is a set procedure to be followed and you do have to be meticulous and at the very minimum you need a camshaft locking tool. Get this bit wrong and there is a real danger of the pistons hitting the valves. I'm sure PNuT will see you right. I'll be most interested to hear how you get on. Setting the timing up is easy, what is a little concerning is it started off (i think) with a cam belt change which shortly afterwards ended up with water pump failure and valve damage.... then all replaced with a new head and it appears to have jumped timing again!
So unless something really basic like forgetting to tighten the cam sprocket pulley bolt then something fairly sinister is going on & it will be finding that which may not be as easy!

We have a mobile Monty.
PNuT has visited Montgomery towers worked his magic in the rain and now the old girl is up and running. In fact running better than it probably ever has done. Just had a good run round the local villages a few times, 50 miles in total and she is purring like a kitten. Apparently stuff wasn't set up right at all, but I'm sure Mark can fill you all in with the technical side. I really struggle to put into words my appreciation that someone would shoot over at the drop of a hat and get me out the ****. Fantastic. I am so pleased. May celebrate with a beer or two tonight, just need to nip and get some in my V70

PNut you are a legend. If there were more people like you the world would be such a better place - what a star! This is a great story and goes to show the level of help available on the forum and the generosity and kindness of the people on here, PNut especially!

No problems, Cam was a few degrees off! not sure how many and it didn't look like a complete tooth but I suspect it may just be the two different halves of the engine being slightly out....
All set up now as it should be and probably somewhere close to when it left the factory the engine sounded nice and as long as nothing sinister within the bottom end should do plenty more miles

Excellent news. I found the most difficult part of the exercise to be lining up the peg in the flywheel with the cut-out in the bellhousing to get the crank in the right position. Thanks for updating us.
