Thanks, I haven’t but I will take a look at that mount.

It would help if you could reproduce it on a 4 post lift whilst someone watches from underneath . Or just give it to a volvo dealer to sort out :-)
As suggested I am going to get the car on a lift this week while someone watches from underneath. Question: how best to replicate the ‘thump’ when the wheels are off the ground and have nothing to push against to load/unload the drivetrain?

I guess I could put the car in gear, get the wheels spinning and then chop the throttle on and off a bit? Might be enough to load/unload the drivetrain and reveal where the play is?

You need a 4 post ramp like an MOT ramp

Ah yes of course. Not sure if this particular garage has one, it doesn’t do MOTs. But we will find a way!

We had the car in the workshop today and the mechanic diagnosed two bad engine mounts:

1. The front vacuum mount; and
2. The top mount.

I believe he is mistaken about the top mount being bad, because I changed it myself very recently. I recall it had a lot of play in it when new. He may be mistaking this play for wear.

Anyway, I am going to have him change the front vacuum mount and (given they are probably original to the car and so 234k miles old), the rear vacuum mount and the mount that sits under the timing belt on the right side of the motor.

With all that done the entire set of motor mounts will be new and the thump will hopefully be gone. I will update here when done.

Thanks all for the help so far.

your thoughts are most likely correct ! haven't you tested the vacuum mounts for leaks?

The mechanic ran a test on both vacuum mounts for leaks (and diagnosed the front one as leaking and perished).
