Myou states clearly that ‘both use JWS3309 nothingn else’.

Wrong,

Mine is a 2012 with an 80sc and does not use 3309. Have you even carried out this task on an xc90?

For MY11 cars - which the OP has - Volvo specify JWS3309. I've included a link to the 2011 MY XC90 owners manual on the Volvo website which clearly states that the gearbox fluid is JWS3309 - and that alone.

What your later model car uses is not the point.... JWS3309 was superseded for MY2012 with AW1. The OP was asking what fluid to buy for his car. And all I've done is re-quote the Volvo position as documented in their website, and in his owners manual...

I've noticed that the handbook lists two boxes, the AS55 and a TF-80SC. Both use the same fluid but with differing capacities. Also, I've read on here that some autoboxes don't use the JWS fluid. Getting a wee bit confused
If it's any help send me your reg and I will check a system for you.

Interestingly, other forum threads seem to indicate that other Volvos with the same transmission moved to 3324 sooner, but the 90s stayed with 3309 till 2013. Seems that perhaps the 3324 is thinner for better economy. If that's the case, I'd rather stick with the thicker better-protecting 3309!

I eventually got around to emailing Volvo. They advised me to use Volvo tramsission fluid. Well thanks very much Sherlock! I then asked them for the part number and the one they gave cross-referred to 3324.

I've now emailed the good folks at Opie Oils for their take on things and they've recommended Fuchs ATF 4400 that's compatible with the 3309 and the 3324 so I'll prob get some ordered and do some dump & fills prior to year-end.

Mine's a 2012 and the handbook recommends AW-1/3324 which ties in with the Opie recommendation.

That’s an aggressive post when it has been proven you are wrong, and I at no stage have made comments towards you,

Perhaps you can learn from this.

Best Regards.

It’s not aggressive, but it does express my frustration that I took the time to find and post a link to the OPs car user manual on the Volvo website for that model year which stated clearly JWS3309 fluid for the gearbox... you then said I was wrong and questioned my experience...

You are entitled to your opinion and forums are for people to express that but when you ignore what is written by the manufacturer in black and white without further explanation - you can expect a push back. I use this forum to discuss Volvo cars, not people, so I actually don’t care what you think or say about me personally - but I do take issue when people don’t think carefully about statements they make or listen to other POV which may then mislead a member asking for guidance.

So, for the last time, my position is that JWS3309 was and is the fluid specified for the XC90 MY 11 which is what the OP has. If you know of any Volvo documentation (service manual, technical update etc. not an email from a random bod on their service desk) that is contrary to that - please enlighten me?

It’s not the first time this topic has caused confusion:
