Default Advice wanted please

Hi guys and gals, new to the forums and first post. Here's the situation, my wife and I are expecting our first child in a few weeks and are looking for an etsate as a second car.

My budget is £3000 and I am looking ideally for a Volvo, although I do like the Passat TDI as well.

I live in the thereHighlands of Scotland so I have to travel most places to look for cars. We have a used Volvo dealer in Inverness (about 40 miles away), Ian Cattanach cars, he has been in the business for about 30 years I believe and he has a 1998 Volvo V70 2.4 XC cross country esatate for sale.

It has done 101,000 miles, comes with history and looks in good condition, it is priced at £2495 and is the petrol model.

I have a couple of questions if anyone would care to reply...

1) Is it worth looking for a diesel model over a petrol? Is there any difference in the two?

2) Is the price ok for this age and model? He does do a six month warranty on his cars.

Any comments/thoughts appreciated.

Hello

Congratulations on the immanent arrival!

I'll leave comments on the mechanicals and pricing to the experts. My comments are based on hauling the family around in our V70 D SE for the last 7 years,

Diesel - 45mpg

Petrol - ???

The TDi loves the open A roads that we found on holiday in Scotland this year, and cruises at 60ish easily, but with tremendous pull when you need to overtake a tractor. Loading it up for a family trip doesn't seem to dent the performance.

We've taken it to France, and cruised at 80+mph fully loaded with family kit and a roofbox on top, and still returned 45mpg.

Diesels cost (apparently) more to service, though.

Hi. Congratulations!

I would definitely recommend the 850/V70. I have had a few small problems with mine - but it has got 158k on it.

For comfort and safety its hard to beat. As for whether you should go for a diesel or a petrol, I would say that your mileage is a major consideration. If you do a lot of miles a diesel makes sense and the 2.5 Tdi is a good engine, and economical for its size (or so I've heard)

Have you tried looking at some reviews? Here is a link to one: http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/volvo/v70-1996.aspx

Personally I'd leave an 11 year old four wheel drive Volvo alone.

Hi
Congrats to you both. As for the possible arrival of a new motor, I've heard of various probs with the AWD systems on the earlier V70s, ie propshafts. As for the MPG, possible low 20s in local driving? As diesel owner myself, the 2.5TDi is ample for it's size, especially with a growing family and just as long as you get it serviced regularly from a decent mechanic. With over 178,000 on the clock, it will cruise - with a full load - @ 90mph all day (but I stick to 70mph though !!). But V70s, VW & Audis...you can't really go wrong. Good Luck.

Nice motor, but I believe the OP is after an estate .

As for the car mentioned, I'll echo the comments of others and say that buying an old AWD Volvo is not exactly the safest bet. We have a V70R AWD and spend a lot of time and money looking after the drivetrain to keep it happy. If you want a mark 1 V70 diesel I would try and find a 2 wheel drive version. £2495 is also what I'd conisder a top price for a potentially troublesome AWD motor.

Hi All . I have an S70 2.5 non turbo and can highly recomend this model. It has no problem moving my family of four around in complete luxury. The boot is enormous and it a pleasure to drive. £1350 is a total bargain and I would buy it myself if I didn't already have one.

Hi welcome to the site.
I have a 72000 mile auto 850 estate 2.5 petrol 96 plate mine is non turbo
fuels not bad 34miles per gallon on a run 28 round town
I would stay clear of the AWD models, been told they suffer problems
But saying that, you could get a AWD and have years of trouble free motoring
any way best of luck
