Default How to value a non-running XC90

Hi all,

Long time watcher and first time poster.

I have a 2004 diesel manual XC90 with 146k which, due to my poor selection of mechanic, accumulated a series of mechanical problems that will cost more to fix than the car is worth. We have purchased a 2007 auto XC90 with much lower mileage and are now looking to offload the 2004 for parts or repair.

I can't find anywhere that gives prices for spares or repair cars. Any suggestions on a) how much it's worth, or b) where to look to find prices?

I tried a scrap car comparison site which valued it at £330, that'a all I can find so far.

For what it's worth, the issues with the car are broken power steering, possible fuel injector replacement needed, possible transmission replacement (conflicting advice from mechanics here), and oil and brake fluid leaks (the latter possibly due to a problem with the main bearing).

Other than that it drives like a dream!

All advice welcome and many thanks in advance.

Thomas

I think it really depends on what condition the rest of the car is in.
Yes mechanically it sounds like a few grands worth of issues to sort out there. Manual box should be pretty bomb proof!! Why do you think it's suspect?
Oil leaks - probably core plug? Brake fluid leaks ..really!! possibly clutch slave cylinder as its the same reservoir. In which case clutch is toast anyway.
Power steering, yep won't be cheap.
BUT - if the car is in good condition otherwise, I suppose you might be looking at 3-4k to put it right and it'll be worth about the same when fixed maybe. We haven't mentioned AWD?
Otherwise you're in the hands of the breakers.
Clutch, core plug and slave cylinder reckon on £1500
AWD if it's toast £500 - £1k
Power steering - no idea
Gearbox - not convinced uness you sort the other issues tbh.

Up to you.

Cheers
Ian.

I would have a ring round the Volvo breakers to see what they will give you - I would still think a decent XC90 is worth circa £1k as a non runner. Most of the Volvo beakers advertise on e-bay so if you search for "breaking xc90" you will find them.

Or you could put it on e-bay as a £1 start no reserve - buyer to collect. In London it should do well.... the sort of problems you describe can be very expensive to fix at the dealers but very cheap to fix at home with second hand parts - except the gearbox...

Well I listed it on Gumtree, as a trial, at £500. I received, no exaggeration, 50 responses within a few hours. There seems to be some demand for non-running XC90s.

Ended up selling it for £700, and the highest offer was £950. So I reckon the £1k figure is broadly correct.

Next time I'd list it on eBay to see how high the price would go. But it was nice to post the ad at 4pm and have the car collected at 8pm, with cash in hand.

Thanks for the help.

Cheers,
Tom

Stick it on ebay spares or repair and see what happens
