"OTHER CAR" problems

Just for once my 850R isn't the subject of this post but I thought I'd ask you mechanically minded folks for some advice re other car!

She is a Porsche 911 sc with a worn ring gear. Nasty noise when starting etc etc

Point is can the gear be replaced on it's own or is it likely to be part of a major cash outflow?

Hope you don'y mind me swearing on this site BUT it seems that other Porsche owners are too snotty to set up anything like this Volvo site which has saved my bacon a few times!!

I know what you mean about Porsche owners!!!

I was at the Classic car show at the NEC last year and was asking one of the people on the Porsche owners club stand a question and ended up in a three way conversation with some other Porsche owner....anyway the conversation went on and this other guy asked us both what our favourite Porsche is? The other guy said it would be an early 911RS and I said it would have to be the 924GTS at which point they both looked at me with a disgusted look and walked off!!!!!

Got to love em really :)

Hi John.
Starter ring gears are usually heated and shrunk onto the flywheel,so are reasonably easy to replace after you have got access to it.

You basically drill through the old ring gear, and remove it from the flywheel. You then heat up the new one, after cleaning the register on the flywheel, and the ring gear will simply drop on, and shrink fit itself as it cools....just like Vaughan said.

I have done a couple in the past, and have found that you dont need too much heat either.

Dont forget to check the starter gear as well.

If you are going to do it yourself, then you must make sure you don't 'blue' the ring gear or it will be no good.
