Default 2004 T6 Inner CV Joint

Hi.

Is there a trick to removing the inner CV joint from the drive shaft? I have a CV boot that needs replacing. Manged to remove the drive shaft from the vehicle pretty easily but the CV joint is being a little stubborn. I can't see any clips. I've given it a few hits with a hammer but doesn't seems to have done much.

Cheers

Is the axle stuck inside the wheel hub/spindle ? If so, it is common on the XC90 and my advice is to give up. If you bring the assembly to a shop to put it on a press, that may damage the wheel bearing. It's easier to replace the hub and axle with used parts. Be thankful you were able to remove the other end from the transmission as it also gets stuck from the locking clip - better test the replacement part is moving in and out with ease. If you want to keep your parts, you may remove them from the car, split the boot open, then you can pop the joint open as well - look up on Youtube. Maybe a shop can do it with the axle still attached to the hub. To detach the ABS sensor, by all means undo the little bolt then push it upwards from underneath with a flat screwdriver. Zero pulling on the wire

Hi.

The drive shaft came out the vehicle both ends really easy, no problems at all. The issue I am having is removing the inner CV joint from the driveshaft to allow me to fit a new boot. I know normally if there is no clip visible a whack with a hammer normally works but this doesn't seem to work.

Red arrow is where I would expect it to part.

Cheers.

On the outer joint. I couldn't get mine off by hitting either, with a big brass drift and a sledge.

Ended up cutting the spider and pressing the inner gear off, then fitting a new joint. If I did it again, I would use a CV puller, but your shaft may be too long for the basic outer style pullers.

Try rotating it in the vise a few degrees at a time and hitting it in a different spot. Ive had a similar problem with a different vehicle. Sometimes the clips don’t want to let go when the open end is facing up. Also, as you rotate it try giving it a gentle tap in the “on” direction before trying to belt it off, this allows the clip (hopefully) to relax and change its grip. I hope that makes sense.
