Tyre choice, help needed
Good morning everyone.
I have recently purchased a lovely 2005 S60 D5 Sport. The car is fitted with some really nice looking 18 inch alloys and low profile tyres. Unfortunately I have today driven over what was a smallish pot hole and seemed to have put a hole in the side wall so the tyre is trashed!! The punctured tyre was a really cheap/budget tyre called a Jinyu (235/40/R18/Z) The roads round here are in awful condition so is if its going to happen again would a more expensive tyre stand up to the bad road surfaces better? Is it worth spending money on a more expensive tyre or should I just stick with cheap/budget tyres? Went to Quick fit and they tried to charge me £200 for Pirelli and £220 for a Michelin. I have had a look at 235/40/R18 size tyres on Blackcircles.com and from what I can see my choice are..... RUNWAY or ACCETERA budget tyres £81 fitted KUMHO £125 fitted GOODYEAR Eagle F1 Assymetric £145 fitted PIRELLI P Zero Rossa £152 fitted BRIDGESTONE Pottenza S001 £154 fitted Any advice would be greatly appreciated.............. at the moment I'm leaning towards spending the £145 on the Goodyear. Regards Jezz |

I went to Barum (Continental owned company) from Continental on 225/45-17s. I also saw a tyre test where the likes of Barum were tested against the "premium" tyres and they tested well. I cannot find much of a difference to Continental other than less noise when driving.

Just fitted Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas to my 54 plate D5 and they have transformed the car. Very stiff sidewalls and the steering is now far more direct and the car doesn't tramline. And I got them cheaper than the Avons that they replaced (£156 for the pair). Thoroughly recommended. My fitment was std 225/45/15 and a 94 load index.

I had Barum's on my old car, can't remember the model unforgettable but they were pretty good. As said above they are continental's.
I've got falken ze914's all round on the V70 at the moment though and I will probably fit them to the C70 when they need replacing. They're mid-range but grip seems pretty good in the wet as well as dry and road noise is good too. They always get a good write up.

That's one of the best tyre's on the market at present, Dunlop Sportmaxx RT been very similar but offering more grip with stronger sidewalls for a sportier feel, but won't last quite as long..

I've lost 2 barums due to split sidewalls due to pothole damage.
Got Hankooks all round on my S60 now more than happy with them & over 10,000 on the 1st one to get replaced & plenty of life left in it. There are 17" though pay approx £100 a corner fitted. A lot of our local roads are getting to be as potholed as cart tracks now, however the local council can't see the problem. |

Hi had the D5 sport 2004 with 17" wheels. Came with Pirelli's which weren't the best. Settled on continental sport contact 3. Agree not cheap but managed to get a deal on 4 tyres.
Good handling in dry and wet and wear seemed fine even on the front, was at 14k miles and still had tread Hope that helps |

I've just put a set of 4 Goodyear Eagle F1 asymmetric 2's on
Found the Pirelli P6000 that it came with not very good & noisy!! |
