Heater Fan '82 245

Hello all

A few months ago, I bought a 1982 245 GLT to add to my collection. I have spent the last few months working hard to repair all the things which were wrong with it! I'm happy to do a thread if there's any interest.



One task I haven't yet attempted yet is the fan heater blower. It is inoperative on all settings. I have tested the switch with a multimeter, and it certainly works, so I presume that the problem is with the dreaded fan motor.

I've read some threads (listed below), but I can't find a detailed guide other than the oft-mentioned http://www.cleanflametrap.com/ website which is all about an air-conditioned version.

Can anyone point me to a thread which explains what I need to do, with pictures? Haynes is as usual quite unhelpful!

I also can't work out which parts exactly I need - I don't want to dismantle everything and then discover that I don't have what I need.

It is normally the bearings giving out that cause the motor to give up. You will want either a complete fan or complete heater.

From memory, take the glove box out, the center section of the dash. You can then undo teh water hoses and teh fixings for the heater and it will wiggle out.

That is for cars with AC. Without AC it can be done correctly in under 4 hours

My 89 GLT heater fan is the same! One day I'll replace it. This is the second winter it hasn't worked but at least you get some heat through from 30mph.

It's not that difficult, honest... Took me an afternoon to replace with a working one from a scrapper. Suppose it helped that I'd taken the scrap car apart to get the working motor out so I had an idea of how to go about it. I used that same article you've linked to and coped with the differences I came across.

First stage- get a working motor from somewhere. Don't worry about the fan, that can be taken off the old one and transferred (mine was).

Ah- you asked what parts you need. You only need a working motor, everything else is reused.

And possibly coffee.

And various snack items.

Awesome, thanks guys. I am now researching the best place to buy a working motor.

I will try to take pictures along the way and post them to help others in the future.

I got mine from Parts For Volvo. Seems okay a couple of years on....

This was 'part way through' . Take your time , plenty of tea stops and you'll be fine. I was sort of forced into doing mine, as the bearing got so dry on the old 'squarking' motor that it over heated and filled the cabin with smoke!!!!

I had some help along the way, but If I can you can!
