Engine: 2.1 Carb B21A: Stromberg Carb

Been loosing oil in the dash pot and the carb has been running rich so I decided to get an overhaul kit for the needle and seal for the needle to cure this. Just in the process of dismantling and surprised to see the adjustment is not an Allen key type but a slot type ?
Can't see how this upper tool will effectively adjust the mixture, and that the small needle retaining screw at the side of the piston might be more useful for any adjustment. However will plod on and see how it goes.
If anybody out there has any experience or knows where the slotted type adjuster can be purchased then let me know m cheers.

I think the slotted screw at the side is just to hold the needle base in the piston. There is a standard fixed position, with the end of the shank level with the piston. You shouldn't alter that to try and adjust the mixture - you can't anyway, because obviously you can't have the engine running if you dismantle it.
My experience of Strombergs in other cars is that there is the later allan key adjuster, where you move the needle, and the earlier fixed-needle, where you screw the jet up or down from below the bowl using a coin in a slot.

Or have I misunderstood your post, and there is a third kind adjusted from above but with some other tool not the allan key one?

Thanks Clifford , there is another adjustment tool which is a ridged pattern, Clan had mentioned this in a post some time ago. I have managed to pretty much sort it out but will need to find the correct slotted volvo tool to make any fine adjustments. Replaced the robber o ring no problem using a pencil to drift it out from below. You can actually move the needle position from below to get an approx position. The job wasn't helped by Burlem sending the wrong carb to manifold gasket , which I eventually twigged and by 4pm had the car running OK. Will have a final tweak at weekend if I can get hold of this adjustment tool, the one I have is a hex one, earlier cars as you say adjusted from below. Many thanks, pics attached show the old components and you can just make out the ridged top piece which screws into the needle assembly once it's tapped back down the tube. Cheers

Job done running great, new needle fitted, adjusted and fitted from below ! Fine adjustment would need the tool pictured available from Dutch Volvo website.

I made up a tool similar to the one you have linked to out of a screwdriver. I just cut the end off and then cut a slot into the end using a thin cutting disc on a grinder. It works fine and cost far less than the 'proper' tool.

If you need a picture please let me know.

On the subject of mixture, I have a wideband in the exhaust and even after rebuilding the stromberg (everything except a new jet) cannot get it lean enough for emmisions. My guess is that the jets wear with modern fuel more than one might expect. While you have it apart pop a new jet in, it is on my todo list before next MOT.

Cheers Ian, my next thought was to make something up perhaps using the hex headed tool I have. A photo would be much appreciated, might buy a second carb to rebuild but understand that the jet would be a pig of a job even with press tools. Currently my needle position is approx to the one in the attached pic and trying to see what mpg I am getting at this. Haven't put it through emissions test as yet but the car is running great.
