If you are concerned that the system is showing rust from the outside then zinc metal spraying could be the answer:~
Had a lot of classic car parts treated this way.
As mentioned the systems are more prone to rust from the inside first.
Bob.

Thanks for the replies. I appreciate the limitations of what I plan to do - all I really want to d o is make it look a little bit prettier whilst it is rusting away.

I posted this on the 'Showroom' thread but I know that not everyone looks there so will post here for others to see.

That's my 850 now 25 years old (delivered new at the end of Feb 1997). It's been tucked away in the garage since last September and with an MOT due at the end of March it will soon be time to awaken the beast for another summer of enjoyment. Nothing has been done to the car since September except to put the CTEK on to keep the battery topped up.

I don't believe starting an engine every week or two and allowing then to come up to temperature. It does them more harm than good, the carbon build up is horrendous, the water sitting in the exhaust does nothing more than rot it prematurely, therefore my engine will get started for the first time later this month.

I have put some of my favourite pictures into a Flickr album so if you want a look you can click the link... Click

If you click the 'Toggle sideshow' button the images will scroll through without the usual adverts.

Could be for sale but you'll need a 3 phase supply and a compressor

I've operated my 3 phase 3 ton Bradbury lift for the last 35 years via a phase converter without any problems. I would unhesitatingly recommend one for someone who has a single phase supply and wants to run 3 phase commercial equipment.

One of the joys of living on an old property is having a 3 phase supply coming in.

I managed to get hold of another 'Special Delivery' keyring. This is an earlier all gold coloured 'Tourist and Diplomat Sales' one which is brand new, getting the chunky Volvo key on was a major task. There seems to have been several different versions of these keyrings throughout the years

I would say yes, that is how it left the factory. I say this because my 1995 850 has exactly the same thing, I know for a fact that my car has never had any underseal added to it after it left the factory(until I started to add some that is). I also found the underseal overspray was on some areas of the rear arch liners too.

Anyway.....your car looks amazing and in like new condition. A true credit to you sir.

You can still buy the pressed metal panel on the rear of the petrol tank from Volvo at a good price. £28.00 part number 3531436.

Your pictures of the front bumper strip down to replace the top cap have answered the questions I needed to know. Thanks for your help on that one.

I just read your post from start to finish. Its a great wright up with nice pictures(I like pictures). Keep up the good work

Agreed - I'd wondered if my regular Volvo dealer would be sick of me ordering up bits from the classic range (850 undertrays I'm ordering at present), but they've said that as long as I'm happy with the wait, then they're fine to order them in for me. Wondering what other options I can order which are rare and still available.

4x4 - this car is a real credit to you. My collection of 850s aren't as clean, however you've given me the enthusiasm to keep at them.
