Hi all.
Not that long ago, an exellent saloon went over to Holland for well over two grand. So this may well be a very good price.
Cheers Mark.

I think you're right. We've all already got "too many"...so we're only interested in bargains, if at all. I would love another "daily driver" 300, but the sheer cost associated with safely accommodating the ones I already have is a major issue, never mind getting more.

I happen to think that ~£1500 is a very fair price for what is clearly an exceptionally nice example (and, yes, they are now potentially attracting that sort of price, to the right buyer), but it's not a bargain. Further thoughts in my latest Driver article.

Speaking personally, if I had space (dry, secure, space), I wouldn't say no to something like that (preferably a 1.4, for cheaper tax!) as back-up for the D5 (rather pertinent at this exact moment, as I have a minor MOT issue on my hands...). However, I know that peachy examples can be had for a few hundred quid if you're both canny and patient.

If someone contacts me with a car for sale, I tell them to put it on eBay, Autotrader, etc. None of the cars which have sold for £2k+ in the last few years have been bought by people within the scene.

We're absolutely into "to the right buyer" territory here. I can (successfully, I think) argue the case for that car being worth £2k+ (based on the cost of repairing and painting a rusty example), but it's only worth that if there's someone there to buy it! I think the market is potentially big enough, and good examples scarce enough, that prices for good cars could go up significantly, but Honest John does lend some perspective in his summary which I grudgingly have to go along with...

It's going to be a while before £500-800 stops being "the norm".

cheers

James

Do you think prices are going to rise for good examples in the 300 series? Are they becoming a true 'Classic'?

It's hardly going to become the next E-Type, but plenty of people have fond memories of them, and getting good ones will get harder, so prices are bound to rise, slowly. A true classic? A bit early to say...but I suspect they'll always play second fiddle to the "A-list" classics (205s, mk2 Golfs, E30s, etc).

cheers

James

Now I realise where I've been going wrong - I've got too many of the damn things.

New motto - save the planet - throw away your 300 - the world has too many!

At least now I know.

Mollusk.

Absolutely the reverse. You don't have enough of the things. You need to buy up all the surplus and more so you can manipulate the market.

Ok. Steve has had no interest at all and needs the space - he will now accept £995.

I know Foggy thinks we have too many, but it just has to be worth that!!

Do people prefer to spend £400 on a wreck and a further shed load of cash doing it up, or for under a grand you get:-

Perfect body, T&T, FSH, 34k - a really usable car.

Yes I KNOW you can get a newer car for less but that's not really the point - at least not on a forum for Volvo enthusiasts!

I don't know why I bother.

Ok ok I'll crawl back under my rock,
Mollusk.

Ahh, but they love a bit of a bargain and if it's 400 miles away who cares?

Custodian of *cough*x.5*cough* vehicles means I'm most definitely out.

Awww! I knew you would in the end. It makes sense, like a sort of refugee camp for oldie goldies.

PS why not convert it to LPG?

It should be pretty easy to find a buyer at £1k. It's clearly a lovely car. It's availability of buyers, rather than value for money, that's the issue.

cheers

James
