Default Gear selector

At my local dealers the other week I noticed (very disappointingly) the new V60 has a mechanically linked gear selector like my S90 has.

The XC40 has a slick seemless electronically controlled gear selector. I didn’t notice which variant the XC60/90 had but have to say I’m disappointed Volvo haven’t seemed to incorporate the same as the XC40 into the V60. The gear selector, clunky and horrible is one of 2 minor things I dislike about my car (compared to the 100s of things I love).

Is this an SPA thing? The mechanical gear selector in my car is horrible compared to the slick electronic version i had in my BMW 335D.

What is fitted to the XC60/90???

Anyone know why Volvo can’t seem to move with the times especially considering their newest model has clunky old tech for gear selection?

Isn't the "electronic" gear selector a T8 feature?
When the car was new, the "mechanic" selector was stiff and a bit difficult to move.
It got better over time and now it works well.

It’s fitted to the XC40 so it can’t be a T8 thing exclusively.

On SPA cars only the T8 has the joystick style selector as standard. It was an option on other models but I think it is not available as an accessory any more. It is needed to run the B regen mode.

I just took it for granted but whenever I drive a dealer demo or courtesy car with a conventional selector I really miss it. It would be part of my reasoning not to go for a D5 in future.

It was marketed as a cosmetic upgrade as it is made of Swedish crystal glass but is actually a good technical upgrade too.

I made the mistake of pointing it out to my Nephew when showing him my new car. I am now saved in his phone as "Uncle Crystal Knob".

I don’t really care what the selector lever is made of or looks like - it’s just a shame Volvo can’t include a non-mechanical selector on their SPA cars.

Poor show.

Well they do. On the hybrid versions. And it was available as an accessory too.

I wonder if it’s to do with the cabin design on the XC40, the centre console is much smaller and/or may be in a different position in relation to the gearbox on the V60.

When you say available as an accessory Philip what do you mean? It was a box to tick on the options list for any SPA car?? Was that expensive?? Surely electrical actuation of auto box modes (D, R, N etc) can’t be an easy conversion???

We can’t all afford T8s sadly so don’t rub it in

When I bought my XC90 back in 2015 it was available on the D5 and T6 as an option. I think it was 1000 quid. I seem to remember when I last costed a new D5 that it wasnt there anymore so perhaps take up was very low and it has been deleted. I dont know if it was ever available of the other SPA cars. A grand seems a lot of cash but I absolutely agree that the standard gear shifter is very clunky in comparison. Oh and I know I am lucky to tool about in a T8 :-)
