I don't know that much about broken or stripped cambelts but the one thing I do know is that turning them over when they have failed will only make things a lot, lot worse.
Their are a lot of valves to bend and twice as many as a standard 740 so even if it was only doing 20mph it is in no relation to what gear and engine speed it was doing!
If it was a lot closer I would be very interested but I wouldn't even attempt to turn over until a new belt, tensioners and whatever runs of the cambelt was replaced.
Nice looking car but if the head is damaged it is almost unobtainable now.

If you actually read what I posted, you turn the pulley on a breaker bar slowly and if any resistance is felt you know then if the valves are bent and therefore can't retract. How do you replace the timing belt without timing it up by moving the cam sprockets and pulley?
I asked him to turn it over by hand to see if it was knackered but he gave me some bull sh@t story about another 8v car he had which had done 400k and said he turned down an offer for £350 for banger racing.

I thought these were none interference engines? Surely it doesn't damage anything if that's the case? Pardon my ignorance if I'm wrong. I did notice the post and thought you might at least clean the bloody thing and put on some decent pictures, particularly considering he professes to love it so much!!

I had a 16v years ago that jumped a few teeth on the belt and that had bent most of the valves

But I thought that none interference were immune to stuff like that?... I've no idea how it all works tbh!

The 16 valvers are interference engines.

I.e, the valves can contact the pistons if the belt snaps or slips.

The 8v redblocks are non interference, so can simply be started up with a new belt.
