Default V50 noise at 30 - 60mph

Noise like whirring of gears gets louder as speed increases - can this be a gearbox problem as the sound seems to come generally from the front?

Is it the same type of noise as you get when reversing at high speed? I'd say it's a safe bet it's probably gearbox.

Thanks - it seems to stop below 30mph in a forward gear but does not make the noise in reverse. I too had some worries about the gearbox!

Hi

This is in the wrong section so you might get more responses moving it to the correct section.

Does the sound get worse or lessen if you go around corners? With opposite turning having the opposite effect?

If so it could be a wheel bearing

Thanks for this - there is no difference in noise whether going straight along road or round corners which made me think that it may not be the bearings.

If the bearing is shot enough it will make noise in a straight line. Jack the corner up and rotate the wheel manually. If it doesn't spin freely or makes any sort of grinding noise I'd suspect the bearing. Also try to wobble the whole wheel top to bottom while jacked up and check for any movement.

My S40 likes to chew through front bearings at nearly the same rate as tyres. Oddly the V50 hasn't gone through a single one yet.
