Cool Engine Service Required

I have recently been plagued with the Engine Management Required Message if I accelerate hard past 2000 revs. I first noticed this overtaking on the motorway and when the message came up the car went into limp mode.

I viewed the forums here and noted the possible reasons for this but the underlying comment was to read the codes. I purchased via eBay an ELM 327 to read the codes via my laptop and after some fiddeling I managed to obtain the codes, they were, P0102, P0112 and P0244.

I decided before I recieved my code reader to clean out the EGR pipes and housing chamber which did have some serious gunk in, but was not fully blocked yet.

I also cleaned out the air filter box and sprayed some contact cleaner on the MAF sensor and the connectors to it. I checked for split pipes rubber pipes but nothing was split.

I am still experiencing this problem after all the cleaning I have done. Has anyone had this problem before and how can I fix it?

Any help would be greatfully recieved.

The first code appears to relate to the MAF (mass air flow sensor). It could be dirty, failed or failing, might have damaged wiring or plug, possibly blocked air filter. I note that you've tried cleaning the contacts and cleaned out the air filter box.

Might be worth cleaning (carefully!) the MAF sensor with IPA, contact cleaner or carb cleaner. The second code seems to relate to ambient air temperature which I believe is also part of the MAF. Both readings are used in the calculations realting to boost & fueling so could be a possible cause of the third code, boost fault (volvo code ECM6805) see the sticky by Mike (Outnumbered) at the top of the page.

I'd look to resolve the MAF first, maybe purchase a second hand unit from a reliable breakers but general advice is dont buy an aftermarket unit, go with genuine OEM, then see if the boost code clears.

Good luck

Steve
