Default Cruise control fail linked to clutch fluid leak

Hi, i've seen a few threads on this issue. but have a few questions if that's ok.

my S60's 'Engine Service Required' alert appeared last week. I've had it checked out and was advised that the issue is very common in that the clutch master cylinder is weeping fluid onto the clutch sensor hence cruise control is effected. I understand that the sensor has been damaged by the leak directly above it.

Both need to be replaced and is £350 inc VAT.

If this is such a common issue and seemingly a design flaw? has there been a recall?

Is the cost a reasonable one?

Is the clutch sensor adequately protected - does it actually need to be replaced?

Thanks in advance.

what i would do is change the sensor ( £40) and put some cloth above it to absorb any fluid weep vapour from the cylinder , the cylinder only weeps slightly , not enough to cause any problems or noticable fluid loss and doesnt get worse.

I taped a plastic bag around the second replacement sensor on mine when the first replacement sensor was contaminated after just over a year.
No problems since, as Clan says about £40 for the part, you can replace it yourself, although some contortionism may be required !

Really pleased with the speedy Responce. Thanks for that. Is there anything you can point me to that shows me where the sensor is?

So changing the sensor is relatively simple, although the garage did say that remedy for the clutch leak didn't need to be imminent I'm worried that my family and I may have to make an call to the aa on the a66 mid winter. Is this something I should be concerned about short term? the car has 55k on the clock.

Thanks guys.

There is a panel just above the pedals that will have to be removed. The sensor is over towards the brake pedal, pale green thing like a miniature bicycle pump. Push the seat fully back, lie down in the footwell and look up. There is a two wire plug to be disconnected and the sensor is attached by push fit ball joints, 10 minutes. I am about to fit my third. I will fit a cloth or plastic bag this time. Two years since the first failure and no sign of fluid loss.

That is outrageous , i would love to ask them how they justify a weeks wage to fit something which costs £50 ( inc VAT ) in literaly 2 minutes ( although the official time is 12 minutes ! ) .... OK they will have to connect up the computer to clear the fault codes but that is only jusifiable to 18 minutes labour ... they must be charging about £650 an hour at that rate .
