RE: pinging
That would obviously be worth trying first. Is the theory that Shell petrol has a slightly higher octane rating, which the engine really needs, or that being "better" it keeps the combustion chamber free of accumulated carbon? If the latter, it would take a while to clean up the accumulation, surely?
In my case, I had already tried all kinds of petrol and cleaning additives, and was left only with the conclusion that carbon build-up after a very high mileage was responsible. This was confirmed, so far as I could see, by shining a pencil torch beam into the combustion chamber. But being lazy I didn't fancy disturbing a perfectly sealing cylinder head to do a traditional lick and polish job, just on the offchance that it might make a difference. The engine has run perfectly since the steam-clean, with not a hint of pinking in 20,000 miles. |

RE: pinging
I thought I would start off gently with this as I am not mega-confident....!
Bought some Wynn's to put in the fuel tank... 150 miles later and no difference. I looked for the stuff that you used to put in the carb/air intake/spark plug holes but could only find the fuel tank additive. Guess I might have to go to Homebase and buy a plant sprayer and try the water mist method ! |

RE: pinging
what has apper to be the best method is to buy seafoam. get the engine nice and hot. and suck it up into engine in small amounts using a spare vacum nipple. then use the water after. it'll smoke like mad but should clear the carbon problem up.

RE: pinging
Hi
If anyone can get hold of this "seafoam" let us all know - I cannot recall ever seeing it in the UK? Beware !! A product called "seafoam" in the UK is acrylic paint for dressmaking (my wife told me) so hey guys don't confuse the two or there will be more than steam comming out of those exhausts! John |

Well, I've got round to doing something about the pinking, at last.
I bought a 250ml bottle of petrol additive Redex and administered a quarter of a bottle down each plug hole using a syringe ! I left the car from 5 that evening until about 11 the next morning. It has made a considerable difference. There is still a little noise but I'd say it has 90% gone. I shall see how we go ! Thanks for all the advice. |
