Doubt anobody is willing to give their car away, even rot boxes would be scrapped for money rather than given away.

Well think of it this way, I'm offering to save a car that someone hasn't got the time for but doesn't want to see it go for scrap, for what ever reason, see what I mean?

don't want to be rude, but you're saying you'd pay for the welding/ other fixes required on a car that would have otherwise been scrapped?

I mean again, the original owner probably also planned on keeping their car on the road and have only decided against it due to the cost/value

Generally people scrap cars because they're un-economical to repair, which means you'd probably be better off just buying a car that you want. that's why a lot of people are at least happy when breaker's have them, at least then they're keeping others' bricks running, and the only other alternative is being made into a smaller brick.

but, good luck finding a nice 700, I have been searching for a particular spec 740 for around 5 years still not seen the right one come up for sale yet.

Cheers, Matt

Hi Matt,

No you're not being rude, thank you for the reply, if a car needs welding I can do that myself, so it costs me time and materials, I don't have to pay for a welders time, which would make it uneconomic very quickly. As we know here Volvos are a bit better built than most others of their age, so I'd expect any other things needed wouldn't be any more than on any other car of a similar age.

The cost/value ratio is different when you do it yourself, look how many other things are not worth repairing because it's cheaper to buy another, but if you have the skills its very different.

If I could find a modern car like a 740 I'd probably already have one, I had an 850 Diesel for just over a year, nothing wrong with it, but we just didn't get on, for me somehow it added up to less than the sum of its parts if you see what I mean.

Out of interest what spec are you looking for?

Marcelle

Fair play to you. I know of other car forums where the owners get fed up with fixing their cars and offer them up for free, rather then see them scrapped.
If you don't ask you don't get.

Go for a 940 as well, same car pretty much but a bit less valuable nowadays so more chance of getting something.

Good luck - hope you get something to rescue.

You never know man, I answered an ad on this very forum 6 or 7 years ago and ended up with a free 245 a lovely couple in Glasgow were giving away. It was mot, tax and I drove it for about 6 months before returning the favour and passing it on free to another enthusiast. I had to write an email explaining why I should get the car and I was picked! Good luck finding one regardless.
