Default 850 AIR CON

Everything seems ok, no flashing lights from the air con but the fan stopped working yesterday. The only day in the whole time I have had the car I have needed to use it, I was driving around viewing houses spending most of my time in the car with four passengers. The air con seems to be working, the car did cool down but the fan could not be heard. Has anyone experienced the same type of problem. I have checked the fuses.
I regualy use the air con to keep it working. Does the engine cooling fan have anything to do with the circualtion of air? this is working fine. Does the air con have a seperate fan that could have given up?

Thanks in advance Dan

Dan,

if you move the selector switches off Auto (but leave the AC switched on) and move the fan slider to 3 (for example) does the fan work and the ducts blow cold air?

If the ac compressor is cutting in and cooling the refrigerant, then if the fan in the heater ducting is not working this could point to either the fan motor (and associated wiring) or the temp sensors. If the system works in manual mode then I would look at the sensors.

cheers

If I move the fan to full blast the fan doesn't work. This morning setting off to work I had the REC and the AIRCON lights were flashing.
I have a look at the sensor, cheers for the advice.

Dan,

flashing rec and a/c lights are indicative of a fault that should have logged fault codes. Are you able to read them?

Unfortunately not, I live in south yorkshire and the only place I know of that can, is a main dealer where I bought the car from. It appears that nobody can recomend an independent volvo garage in south yorkshire.
Maybe there just is'nt any! Its also due a service, and I am experiencing few gearbox gremlins, I have just sorted out the ABS TRACS fault I had, Pump had failed, luckly for me it was an early one where you can split the pump and the ECU.
Not very good for a 70,000 mile car, 2 owners from new including myself. Still it is nearly 10yr old.

I got myself a copy of the haynes manual and figued out how to read the codes. It seems to point the fingure at the heater fan, am I right in thinking this is behind the glove box. I tried to remove the glove box last night, I had the right key to fit the glove box screws, but could'nt find one to fit the three screws under the glove box!
Can you get a device to fit all interior screws?
I also decovered the problem with my auto box, I keep getting the flashing arrow on the dash, its been diagnosed as the the gearbox inhibitor switch, has anyone had one replaced, if so how much should I expect to be charged? Is this a pain to fit, for the extremely novice mechanic?

The maintenance section of volvospeed.com has a detailed description including photographs of how to change the gearbox PNP switch.
