Default Squeal from the engine.

I've got a squeal that comes intermittently from the engine bay.

It initially lasted for a couple of hundred yards and then disappeared, but is now
lasting for about a mile on a bad day.

Doesn't happen when I'm in coasting in neutral !

It rarely if ever happens from cold start first thing in the morning, sometimes happens when I drive my car to the shops at lunchtime from work, and is now always happening when I drive home after work for about the first mile of my journey and then it disappears and doesn't come back.

One of my mates said alternator and another said clutch.

What's the general consensus ?

Regards

Ben

Hi,

Could also be the PS pump, the water pump or even the oil pump....

Bet that has made your day!

I would suspect it may be the water pump as you here this on a few cars and is like a shrill screeching...
Yes..?

Des. . .

Could be any of several things, but you can start to eliminate them.
Tired or loose fan or power steering belt - adjust, try a squirt of halfords seat belt lubricant.
Cam belt. Check mileage/condition, and again, a squirt of stuff.
Alternator - squirt of WD40
Water pump - try a drop of oil down the hole on the top.
Steering pump - try removing belt.
ditto alternator.
