Default Owner for 1 hour new engine needed. Please help

Hi, I'm hoping you can help me.

I purchased an xc70 2 days ago. Cambelt had been changed, but I was unaware of the aux belt being an issue. Bye bye engine.

The car was bought private, so it's break it or replace the engine.

I'd like to replace the engine, but being my first Volvo I'm struggling to find a company that can supply and fit one. I'm also extremely wary of getting stung again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

Richard.

Richard can you give full details of your car ie year , engine, gearbox etc and you may well get a more accurate response. My instinct is that it will be a D5 auto.

Apologies.

Yes, 2010 Volvo XC70 2.4 D5 SE 4x4 ESTATE Diesel Auto.

I know it'll be an expensive fix, but I have decided to do it. Just need to find a reliable garage to do it.

Cheers

You won’t need a full engine, just a cylinder head and camshafts. Autotec cylinder heads down country specialise in refurbishing these and will sell you an exchange head and cams. Still a large job but saves any hassle of finding a compatible engine and removing the engine entirely. It’s what I would be doing.

Obviously it goes without saying you must find the cause of the failure to start with and I would only be using genuine Volvo bits on this repair.

That's terrible luck but you are right to do it, if it is otherwise a good car. You are sure that it was a private sale and not a dealer masquerading as a private seller? Because you would have some recourse against a dealer maybe, under the sale of goods act.

I wish I'd bitten the bullet with my 2004 Range Rover when the transfer box went. Car worth £2k. Garage repair £2500 so I sold on eBay and got £1400 spares or repair, which was good but the car was immaculate and I'd had it 8 years. The guy who bought it had a donor car and could do the job himself. Sometimes you just have to do it regardless.

There were recalls for this back in 2010 talk to a volvo dealer and see if yours are all up to date regarding the tensioner and aux belt .

Thanks very much, I really appreciate that.

I'm still waiting from my garage on confirmation of what has happened. As soon as I know I'll get in touch with the various people that have been suggested.

Again a big thanks to all of you who have commented.

Richard

I'm very sorry to hear what happened to your car. It really sucks.

I know you say the car is at a garage now to find out what's wrong. Is this garage an engine specialist or a Volvo specialist? If its just some "ordinary" place, they won't be equipped to deal with these cars. You need a specialist.
