General: What's Silly Mileage on a Used S80?

I'm in the UK and there are some tempting diesel S80s for sale from independent car dealers, usually 2004 to 2006 models with 60,000 miles on the clock, for about £7,000 to £8,000. They seem like a bargain to me, especially as some are being sold by car dealers specialising in ex company fleet cars. These will have been maintained well and mainly done motorway miles, not local driving. Hence they make better used buys. This is what the dealers' literature says anyway!

What do you reckon, is 60,000 miles on a diesel S80 from 2004-2006 a safe used buy or is it a little too much? And if 60k miles is ok, would I be better looking for a used diesel auto or manual?

In general a looked after Volvo is capable of lunar mileage. At 60k they are just warming up, however check the service history to make sure it has had regular oil changes etc....

I believe the interval is 10,000 miles.

Its a buyers market a the moment especially for big cars so haggle hard and there are bargains to be had.

Auot or manual is really down to personal preference. The manuals are slightly more economical if driven correctly, but the auto is just fantastic and on a big car like an s80 really useful in my opinion.

Service interval is 12k on the old S80 D5 and 18k on the new S80 D5 (old/new shapes respectively, no new D5 engine in old S80).

For me, I love the auto. On the motorway there's not much difference in economy and I prefer the all round driving experience with it. Around town it kills the economy, which can drop as low as 26mpg! On the motorway 45mpg+ is possible.

You might also want to consider the 2.5T petrol if you can find one. I don't do as many miles as I used to, and with the increased cost of diesel I think I would have gone for one if these instead, if I was chosing again.

I bought 2004 S80 2.5T a few months back. Its an auto, full dealer history 74k miles and is the dogs dangles. Im getting on average 26 around the doors and have managed 40+ on a run but that was taking it very steady. Realisticly on a run I get 32 at 75+.
O by the way I paid £4.5K with all the toys and 18" alloys!! Am I happy -

I bought a 53-plate S80 D5, seven months back. It's a manual, full dealer history, 85K miles. 45 combined cycle, 65+ on a run at a steady 70mph.

Nice car, and it grows on you.

My 03 S80 D5 with 96000 miles cost me £6995 18 months ago. Ex fleet car with complete service history.

60000 miles is absolutely nothing but bear in mind a new costly cam belt will be needed shortly. I chose to buy one with a few more miles on it that had already had the cam belt changed.

At the prices you mention, go for it, but make sure you get the SE pack upgrade.

Check for clunky steering and central locking faults amongst other things.

I get 50+mpg easily out of mine. I commute and do the odd 60-80 miles on the M6 every weekend.

Even more important, make sure you get a facelift model (even though I regard the pre-facelifter as intrinsically more beautiful - particularly with the non-waffle-style rad grille).

As said before it's better to have a wellmaintained high miler than a low milage car with limited or questionable history.
