850 RADIATOR CHANGE ????????
Have discovered a leak from my radiator, doesn't look like it is fixable, so i was going to try and replace the radiator myself but have a few queries.
Have managed to find a radiator at euro car parts for £110 + vat which i think is quite resonable, but i have a few concerns with regards to the auto transmission cooler pipes where they fit to the radiator, the ones on my car are very corroded and i haven't the foggyest how to remove them, i would reckon that i am going to have to purchase 2 new retaining clips and o-rings from volvo. does anyone know if you need a special tool to remove or refit these clips or how to do it yourself. If anyone has done this job before and has any tips, on what to or what not to do i would be very grateful for the advice. Have looked through the haynes manual but there isn't really any information there, The car is an 850 2.5 10v auto estate (1996) Thanks John...... |

RE: 850 RADIATOR CHANGE ????????
the clips are £5+VAT each from volvo!!! (part number 6842411) although you can reuse the old ones if you take them off carefully.
they are very easy to remove, heres a volvospeed pic of how to get them off: http://www.volvospeed.com/Pics/repai...oilcooler3.jpg and heres volvospeeds instruction on getting it off: use retaining ring pliers to pry the connector open, pink arrows (gently) as you pull back on the connector, red arrow. And assemble in reverse order. i don't think theres any o-rings to worry about. if your disconnecting the tranny it might be worth doing a flush instructions and pics here: http://www.volvospeed.com/Repair/Transflush.htm |

RE: 850 RADIATOR CHANGE ????????
Thats great news, i was worried that it was a volvo dealer job (£££) Will order the clips from my local dealer in the morning. Gave the car a flush last year but i have noticed lately that it wasn't that nice pink colour anymore, i didn't use original volvo oil, i was told to use comma dextron 111 AQ3 oil but i would have to change it every other year. only £10 for 5 litres. Thanks for the detailed info, hope i can return the favour sometime. John.......

There is an O ring on the end of those pipes so check its condition.
The oil cooler pipes can fall off (they did on my car) so it could be worth putting a cable tie around those clips. Simon |

There are actually two O rings on each of those pipes. One is a square section clear jobby, and the other a normal black O ring.

Went in to the dealers today and he recommended that i replace both the seals on each pipe, so have just gone ahead and ordered them all. Should get them tomorrow, don't know how long the radiator will take to come from euro though. hopefully soon.

Make sure you put a cable tie or jubilee clip round each of those clips on the oil cooler, also not that they have a wide end, and a narrow end. The difference is slight, but they will only fit properly one way round!!
