Hi,
yesterday our Volvo V50 2 litre diesel 55 reg went into what I presume is limp mode (it won't go above 2800 revs) We took it to our regular garage and they couldn't find any faults, told us to take it to the Volvo garage.
Money being tight we'd like to know if there are any obvious things we should look at first.
It is reluctant to start in very cold or damp weather and occasionally feels a little bit lumpy under acceleration for a second and then recovers.
Also are there any diagrams anywhere which would tell us where everything is?

Thankyou

Your regular garages code reader "should" be able to detect the most common issues but not all. Some mechanical items don't get monitored and therefore don't show up.
There are plenty of instructables on this site.Having a go yourself will depend on your mechanical know how as the possible causes are a few and not straightforward.
A trip to Volvo will probably be your easiest option long term.

Agreed, a scan on VIDA at a main dealer is £40 and worth it to start pinpointing problems, let them tell you the fault and have them produce an estimate and print it out, it'll be a stupid amount of money but if you have it you'll have the part numbers for what you need to source it cheaper and an idea of the labour time an independent garage should be charging you

Clean the EGR valve and the pipe going into the intake from the EGR, and then attempt to clean the injectors using a fuel additive, that would be a start, only money you would spend now would be the injector cleaner additive and some brake cleaner to clean the EGR.
Check for tutorials online on how to unmount the EGR valve and how to clean it.

If it doesn't solve your problem, at least you will have 2 less things to worry about and at a low cost.

If you wan't to rule out the EGR you can get a blanking plate off e-bay for £4. Fit that and unplug the electrical connector. If it fixes the issue you can either take it off and clean it hoping that the stepper motor is working or leave the blanking plate in although that is "un-economic" and I could never condone doing that
