As usual, just picked up on this after it has run for a while, but particular thanks for Viper for some serious, rational and intelligent postings...

Just one question, I have always understood that converting to LPG leads to poorer fuel economy, but that this was more than offset by the cheaper fuel. This was borne out by my brother-in-laws 740, which would return about 25mpg on Petrol and 20mpg on gas. So, if it is using more gas, surely it will have a higher CO2 figure? The only reason i can think of for this not to be the case is if the fuel itself has a lower carbon content per litre?

Thoughts?

Philip

Yes, that's right, you lose about 20% of your MPG using LPG compared to petrol, a litre of LPG contains less energy than a litreof petrol.

The CO2 is lower, remember this is based on driving a kilometer.

so over a kilometer your producing less CO2 but using up more natural resources of which Gas is in low supply.

That's always been one of my arguments about diesel over petrol. One is using much less fossil fuel to cover the same distance and it's also more energy efficient to produce as it requires less processing. Now the catalytic converters and other bits and bobs remove more and more of the harmfull particulates, diesel is probably the most enviromentally friendly option if you start at the beginning of the cycle to the end.
All we need now is more Bio-diesel produced.

Am I right in thinking (or is the old grey matter playing tricks on me) that a few weeks ago, some nut in the EU said he wanted new car models to have emmisions to be as low as 120g CO2? - If so wonder how that will affect car tax duty rates?

The only cars currently that are 120g and lower are, Noddy car (A2, Corsa, Fester, Smart) 1.3 and 1.4 Diesels and 1.0L and lower Petrol (1.3 diesel Corsa,, sounds like cruel and unusual punishment to me,, lol)

Its unlikely to happen before hybrids become widespread, but then they`ll have to tax fat cats in their gas guzzling 1.4L Diesel Astras..

The land needs to have a rest following sustained periods of production.

But if you think that by using "bio-fuel" we help, think again.
How many fields would be needed to produce how much oil to run the current number of cars in the world..?
The planet is not big enough for that! and we'd all starve!!
They are already chearing rain forests in Brazil to feed cattle in the US and europe!!! We need the rain forests more than we need cattle feed or fuel..
A plan to produce palm oil and use that in fact uses more energy than would be saved to even get the fuel to the garages..

Bio is Ok on a local scale, or where you use second hand oils like used cooking oils. But as a direct replacement for diesel, it is not really viable...
