Smiths Tachometer strange behaviour
So.... most of the time my P1800ES tachometer is well behaved
But sometimes its a bit sticky on startup and a tap on the glass seems to do the trick and moves off zero. Yesterday however it jumped all the way around to 7000 RPM's and stayed there. Now the engine was behaving very well and certainly not doing these RPM's. Even with engine off but with the ignition on the needle was stubbornly on 7000. However after several minutues driving it slowly fell back in stages and carried on as nothing had happened. So please if anyone has any ideas why this happens I would be really pleased to know. Best wishes S |

After 37 years these instruments need a service ! there are capaicitors which go off and the lubricant which is on the needle bearing has turned to grease , There are specialist repairers in UK for these smiths instruments .. Its not just volvos its all the 1970's smiths equipped cars with tachometers . you will probably find it works better in summer :-)

If I remembor correctly, the ignition fully goes though the tach also. but doesn't seem to be effecting anything. Good luck.
