Thanks everyone really helpful perspectives as always. I'll keep this thread going through to rolling road stage. I am inclined reading everything and considering what else I've done to go down the same route as Russ and go for the tubular approach. Should match well with my simonz exhaust. I'm imagining it will clamp up to the head with my inlet as the original does.

Just getting ready to put the new core plugs in my head and picked it up to hear a metallic rattle! On removal of one of the plugs found the tube that runs the length of the head is a bit of a loose fit. Is there anything that should concern me about that? I am Presuming the slots in it face downwards directing coolant at the valves?

Just found an old post in this. It's an interference fit and the slots face downwards.

Default Holes in the head

Not as serious as the title would suggest. Just finished bolting the engine together and looking more closely at the head on the left hand side of the thermostat housing as you look at it. There is a blanking plate missing. Ok I can make one. There is also a threaded hole. Comparing it with the head on my old B18 where there isn't one. Can someone enlighten me please. I've been searching through loads of pictures on the web

on my 71 it looks like the coolant temp sensor for the fuel injection.

That makes sense. It was an injection head that has been modified for this build. I'll blank it off with a suitable bolt. Thanks for that though- I was curious.

The hole was for the fuel injection temperature sensor and the larger hole with two bols was for the auxiliary air slid again for the fuel injection. Both can be blanked off.

I've spent the afternoon in the garage stripping the auxiliary components from the original motor ready for removal and fitting of the new unit. Don't know why this hadn't occurred to me before but my old B18B has a combined inlet and exhaust manifold. I had assumed they were separate and was planning to use the inlet alongside the Trimning manifold that's on its way from Sweden. If anyone has an inlet they want to get rid of please let me know.
I was also taking a long hard look at the old radiator and thinking that my new engine is going to need some better cooling capacity. Recommendations for radiators - probably ally are welcomed. I would want one with a temp sensor threaded in so that I can fit an electric fan too. A puller is favourite but there's not much room so maybe a pusher from the front. Again, I would welcome your suggestions gents.
