Very true Rick! I explored other options like mounting a small motorbike 2 cylinder engine on a mobility scooter chassis and having multiple alternators and a big inverter on it but the cost started creeping up considerably!

Not much occuring on the Hearse front, it has run out of fuel several times for the OH in the last 2 weeks. Intermittently working fuel guage and sub-20 mog are a bad combination!
I just hapenned to see this last night and so have made enquiries. We still haven't had the prop bearings doen or the wheel balancing/tracking, these are becoming more urgent now, but will have to wait until the Venga is sold for financial reasons. In other news, the Venga is for sale and we've replaced it with a Lexus RX 400h, a 3.3 hybrid 4x4. It's very nice , way better than the Venga in pretty much every way, not economy but it seems to do low to mid 30's mpg-wise which really isn't bad considering its size, weight and power. Boy does it shift, there is 268bhp of electric motors (instant torque) and the 3.3 V6 chipping in too (although it doesn't input it's full power driving the wheels, but splits it to turning a generator). We've only had it a couple of weeks, but it has already won approval, from me and the OH. Link to Venga, just in case anyone on here is intereseted, I know i've maligned it as the "Venga of boredom" but it has been very reliable and economical, so there is very little to complain about really, apart from being slightly dull!

Think you'd best invest in a fuel can and a gallon of petrol in it Tom! To be refilled immediately after running out!
Alternatively, reset the trip meter each time you (or your OH) adds fuel, remember how much fuel you've put in and then work out the expected range at say 15mpg. When that distance is approached on the trip meter, refill and start again. Worked for me for 3 years with my 760 until i fixed the fuel gauge! If that's an AQ151C then you should be on to a winner with that engine. See if you can get clarification on exactly which version it is.

You want the later version with end thrust crank rather than the early centre thrust

Finally got the tracking and wheel balancing sorted today, £69.98 for the lot, I was expecting it to be more expensive so that is a positive. All the wheels were out of balance (I did ask them to check all four), the most was 30g which apparently isn't too bad. The tracking needed a minor adjustment but again wasn't too bad. Result? Very much improved. Less vibration everywhere, steering wheel and seat base, it feels more stable and it stays going in the direction you point it! Had a little trip up the dual carriagway and there is still a little steering wheel wobble between 60 and 70, but is much improved - the front tyres are a little worn on the outside edge so I wonder if that could be the cause (a hangup from the coilovers perhaps). Had a look at the brakes whilst the guys had the wheels off, there's about half the meat left on all discs and pads, so shouldn't have to worry about that for a while, likewise the tyres - between 6mm (rears) and 4mm (front drivers side). A good job jobbed, prop bearings next and maybe an engine. Will depend if I can get hold of the ebay seller of that penta engine!

Just make sure to fit a cat cover over the catalytic converter to help prevent theft. I have recently bought a 2015 Toyota Auris Hybrid and bought a cat cover off ebay for £30 and had 2x 16mm steel bars welded to the long edges and had it fitted for £17. I have also yesterday used POR 40 fibreglass filler over the securing bolts. Hope thieves move on to something easier! Plan to de-badge it too. As I have a 3 year warranty I would have to fit a genuine Toyota cat at a cost of £950 if stolen to keep warranty! The RX400 cat depending on year for non genuine is £2-300 on ebay. I like my Auris Hybrid. Around 55mpg on a run, mostly at 60-70mph and in town mpg much higher as using battery. car has done 26,000 miles. James. |

So contact has been made with the Penta seller, he may be willing to sell just the block but depends on the offer made. IIRC there was a BIN for £600 before the river gypsies pinched the flywheel and starter motor from the stored engine! I am thinking I will offer sub £200 for the complete block, as he should be able to get some decent money for just the head, carbs and inlet manifold. If not acceoted, i'll just bod on the whole engine and see if he'll 'buy back' the bits I don't want
I was hoping to be able to use the 531 head for a simple power/torque upgrade due to the apparent better intake side of this head, but I understand it isn't inherently compatible with the K-Jet injectors, so this is made simpler by not needing the head - just need the complete block. The seller knows very little about the engines (the other of the pair he has fitted to his boat, to replace a busted AQ131) although the one he is now using apparently runs very well and they came from an early 90's boat. I've found these production dates online: AQ151A: 1985-1986 AQ151B: 1985-1987 AQ151C: 1985-1989 Whilst i'm thinking about this, to make the most economical and torquey improvement possible (on our very limited budget) I'm thinking about injectors and exhausts. The injectors i'm considering are these ones, i've posted on another thread about K-Jet injector options, but these seem to be fitted to loads of Mercedes, Ferrari and some Renaults of various engine sizes and power outputs (103bhp 1.8 i4 to 414bhp 5.2 V12), they also seem to be reasonably priced compared to the 0 437 502 020 and ...022 injectors fitted to the B200ET and B280E respectively. Exhuast wise, i'm thinking a custom made stainless 2.5" 'long-life' system, there is a place in Yeovil that specialise in these and I've been meaning to get a quote for ages. Does anyone have experience with a redblock full stainless system? In this case as smooth and quiet as possible is the aim, we'll eventually be doing a lot of 80mph cruising throughout Europe in this here Hearse and exhaust drone and vibration would be quite irritating! /Ramblings.

Tom, you'd be better off getting the complete engine and then disposing of anything you don't need as whatever the seller offers you for the various bits you don't need will almost certainly be a lot less than what they're worth.
Also see my reply about the injectors in your other post, a lot of things might give you a "light bulb moment"! With the exhaust, to be honest you're best off talking to the exhaust builder about how you want it to sound. A good builder can make it do what you want and need it to do. A 2.5" exhaust should be about right for the 2.5L AQ151 though. That said, because it has a much longer run from the engine to the tail pipes, a 2" system might well be much better as it will help restore low down torque and isn't any different to the standard size. It's all about pulse tuning and the volume of each pulse - not how loud it is but how much space it takes. https://www.enginelabs.com/engine-te...gn-and-theory/ Have a read of that and do some of your own searches on exhaust pulse tuning, you'll soon get the idea! You'll also see why i'm suggesting sticking to the standard bore with the larger engine might actually be a good idea because of the length of it.
