Angry 'Engine System Service Required'

I have a Volvo S40 D5 Rdesign (2008)

Yesterday the warning light came on saying 'Engine System Service Required' on the dash board. Have no idea what this means;
The car doesnt show any obvious problems when driving it. Is this going to be and expensive repair?? Is this a common problem that volvo's have?

The car had a full service in Feb and its only done 40k!

Any advice will be much appericated, thanks.

This means that there is a fault with the engine control system , and needs to be investigated by the volvo garage . There will be fault codes stored in the car computer to indicate what is wrong , Have you been visiting the volvo dealer for servicing and recent recalls?

My guesses are in order of likelyhood:
1 ,engine oil level too high ( should be 10mm below max on the dipstick )
2, particle filter temperature sensor faulty
3, Particle filter pressure sensor faulty .

There are dozens of other causes though so best get it looked at ...

Yeah the car was called up sometime last year for some sort of a 'software upgrade' not sure exactly what it was for though.

The car has full service history, and it was done all by Volvo dealers in the past.

Im goning to check the oil level on my car now and book it in for a check up by the dealers. Lets hope its not an expensive trip to the dealers!!

Thanks alot for your time and advice :-)
