What year is this S40?!

I have a feeling you require another section of the forum if it's 2004+

Ignore me if not lol

2004+ Instruction overview:

An outline of the process is here but if you search you will find the Volvo .pdf instructions, the instructions are exactly the same for the C30/S40/V50/C70 family.

Main points to note are:
  • Turn on ignition to release steering lock but don't start the car (leave keys in ignition)
  • Move steering wheel to a position where you can access the little holes at the rear to release the Airbag.
  • Wind down window (for later when re-connecting battery again).
  • Disconnect the (-) negative terminal of the battery (place something over the terminal so there is no chance of it touching battery again).
!!! LEAVE THE CAR FOR 10 MINUTES !!!
  • Look at instructions and practice on the new wheel at releasing the catch for the airbag, then release the airbag of current wheel.
  • Remove airbag connections (take photo with phone or note down on paper which colour wire goes to which colour connection).
  • Straighten up steering wheel
  • I think it was either a 14mm or 15mm bolt that holds the wheel on, hold wheel while you start to slacken the bolt - remove bolt.
  • Remove connection of wheel to car - Green connector in the middle.
  • Carefully remove the wheel from car and feed the electrical wires (for
  • airbag) through the guide hole and out from the back of the wheel.

Move across any button blocks (Audio / Cruise).
  • Put new wheel in place as you feed the airbag wires back through the new wheel make sure you put the airbag wires through the plastic guide loop again.
  • Place the steering wheel on straight just as the old one came off.
  • Re-insert green plug connection (connecting wheel electrics/connectivity back to the car).
  • Insert bolt and tighten, torque figure is in the instructions (.pdf).
  • Insert airbag connections, make sure you get the right colour wire back to the right connector (check with photo or notes).
  • Push on airbag to lock in place.
  • Wheel replacement complete.
  • Re-connect battery but ensure no one is near the airbag (just encase).
  • With some cars the doors will auto lock on connecting the battery again so this is why I've said right at the start to have a window down (keys in ignition! ), 99.999% of the time no problem.
  • Turn stereo on and check out audio buttons.
  • Job complete!

Nice easy job that anyone could do.

Jamie,

You've already got a another thread with exactly the same question - LINKY!. You need to make a post in your other thread to bump it up to the top of the list as opposed to creating a new thread asking the same thing.

Honestly guys this is such an easy job even for a complete amateur.

The most important part to remember is leaving the car for a short while after removing the battery connection (-). This is to let the residual power left in the car disperse prior to removing the airbag.

20min job max!

Have a practice with the new wheel, put a screw driver in the hole and practice moving the retaining clip that holds the airbag then once you know what your feeling for try it on the existing wheel.
