Service cost and mpg....
Hi all,
Going to take my 2005 v50 d5 in for a service in a day or so. It's done just over 12000 since the last service (according to the book) and it was around a year ago. I've only had the car for 3 weeks so it will also act as a bit of peace of mind and getting fresh oil/filters/plugs etc. Just wanted to know what I should be expecting price wise for such a service? Also managed to plug my mileage and fill ups into that 'fuelly' app thingy, and getting back an average of 40mpg. This is using he car for a 50 mile round trip to work each day on motorways and A roads. Does this sound right or should I be getting more? Thanks in advance! |

Hi, I'm in exactly the same boat and asked at my local (indy) garage today, oil and various filters and all other parts he estimated to be around a £100, and labour just over so all in around £220, (providing they don't find anything unpleasant!)
Have no idea what a Volvo major service would cost, (and to be honest don't want to as I'd like to sleep tonight!!) but have never found dealerships to be any better than a trusted local independant garage, they just charge double! Was originally considering doing it myself, as always have in the past and that would save me a £100, but on the other hand it's finding a free morning and contending with jacking my car on a slope! I may yet take this option just for the manly satisfaction of servicing my own motor As for mpg, mines a 58 V50 2.0D and like you i do just under 50 miles a day with roughly half m/way and half A roads. I tend to drive early in the morning with little traffic and I like to drive spiritedly, with fair acceleration but stick fairly close to the speed limits, I honestly do! This has been getting me an average of 47.5 ish mpg... Quite happy with that... As for your fuel app, I use the car's mpg meter on the dash, also going to double check it with a couple of fuel receipts and a pen and paper, old skool like Rgds Stu

I'm not too mechanically minded so wouldn't really want to give it a go myself. I was hoping for it to be no more than £200 so that's good news. Just fingers crossed that there is nothing bad comes up! I don't have the built in mpg computer in the car (I believe it was an extra when new...?! .....I know how stupid that sounds!) I hope I can squeeze a few more mpg out of it as it settles in to my travel routine etc. |

I have a V50 D5 2008. On my 160mile commute, almost all on Motorways I get between 50-60 mpg if driven carefully. I find I get about 10% better mpg using Shell V-Plus fuel.

Have read a fair few positive reviews of Terraclean, supposed to help fuel consumption amongst other things?
Jury seems to be out though on whether it really is beneficial or not...

2008 C70 D5, commuting 21 miles each way cross-country, 50mpg average with a fairly light foot on Shell's standard fuel.
To the OP, on your commute I would expect better economy than you are getting, unless a lot of your motorway distance is spent crawling along in 2nd gear.

My automatic box is the 5 speed. When did the 6 speed come in? Do you think the extra gear gives better fuel economy?
Hopefully after a service tomorrow it will get better mpg?! Thanks for all the replies. |

Not sure on auto's but assuming it's the same, the 6th gear definately does help with fuel consumption, on the m/way at 70ish anyway, keeping your revs around the 2k mark...?
The wife's old car, a c max 1.8 petrol used to be pulling 3000 revs at 65mph as it only had 5 gears, guzzling fuel! Lack of 6th gear was my major gripe with that car!

Well I can get a 70 mph cruise at about 2100 revs so not too much difference in the gearing then.
Got the car back from the service, 95 quid for oil, filters etc change and a general health check Etc. The guy did mention that the interval for replacing the timing/cam belt is 67k, and the mileage is around 67200 so advised me getting it done. Any ideas what price is right for this work? He quoted me around 300 for it. The wife's little citroen c2 cam belt went a few months back and it cost 700 to strip the engine down and sort it out etc. Could do without that massive payout again so think I will get the belt on mine done soonest. |

I don't think the mpg you are getting is far wrong judging by what our C30 D5 Auto managed.
If I'm honest, you should have made the call to your local dealer before buying the car to ascertain the cost of the service. They will tell you when it was last in the dealer network and if any 'big' items are due. If you font have breakdown insurance, a Volvo service includes this for 12 months - worth about £85. They will also ensure you are running the latest software. If you can afford it, I would get a dealer to do this first service in your ownership. Otherwise, find a local Volvo specialist - don't give it to some bloke under the arches who is cheap. You want someone who knows these cars to check it over for you. |
