Had that too, John, in my column-change A60 van (made into an estate car). It stuck in neutral at a garage so I wobble the linkages about underneath until I had 3rd - and all 5 of us limped home in the one gear!
Ditto in my Ford Thames camper-van (the one with the Ford Consul engine) many years earlier, but this time near Grenoble in France! Got adept at what not to do, and how to cure it if I did do it (!) and it got us through Switzerland to the French Riviera. That was in the early '60s.
Ah to do it again now.......

I had a '63 Vauxhall Cresta PB 3.3 in the late 80s with bench front seat & column shift automatic. When it was my turn to be 'designated driver' we regularly got 6 of us in it, 3 in the front & 3 in the back

Had a '66 viscount 3.3 with the TWO speed powerglide transmission. Huge seats, electric windows, huge boot.

Had a 1974 on an N plate Wolseley Six auto, selector lever on the dash to the right of the steering column - Damask (dark) Red with red cloth.

It was a spaceship.
