Default Tappet lifters .....B18 engine

As a further to my ticking P1800 post I discovered it was a sticking lifter.
Removing the lifter and inspecting the bottom I discovered the bottom of the lifter marked where the can had been tapping it.
Rebuilding it back up in Thursday but one question about reassembly of the tappet lifters. I know to emerse it in oil before refit but thought I may mix some graffite in with the oil, it was how I was trained when fitting a new cam...thoughts please

Personally I think that Mollyslip in your engine would do the job. I use it in all my cars, have done so for decades

My understanding is that you use some graphite spray or paste to work harden the lines on the cam shaft which is a cast piece of metal then machined. The graphite improves the metallic structure right at the surface. Micro particles work into the voids and for want of a better description, get embedded in the structure making it a high carbon, high hardness steel. That’s on a brand new cam.

I’ve not heard of the same for the cam followers, but it can’t hurt for sure and in theory it’s the same.

I’ve never done it, by the way! But I would.

You can get cam paste from somewhere like Burtons, Brookhouse also have it, if you need it. Cam follower should be fine unless the surface has started to break up. It has to go back on the same cam lobe, as do all of the others if you've removed them. Clean well and deburr if necessary. Wash with carb or brake cleaner.

Thanks Derek, all back together now, built up with oil. Used a flush as well but only for 10 minutes. Car purring like a cat.
