Default Immobiliser See Manual

Hi guys,

So I had issues starting my car last night after getting the shopping in.

Unlocked the car (V50 2.0D 54plate 115,000K miles) fine, key in the ignition and cycled it through position 1 then 2 as usual. Nothing untoward, all warning lights come on and then extinguish like normal, turn to position 3 and nothing... while scratching m head "Immobiliser see manual" comes up on the dash.

After a bit of panic and reading of forums, I tried the lock/unlock off the key method several times, nothing. Tried wiggling the steering wheel whilst trying to start it, nothing. Then while violently shaking the key with the ignition in position 3 she fires into life!

So I manage to get her back home, and the car runs the whole way like there is no issue. Turn off the car, take the keys out. Then attempt to start the car again and the same issue. I tried the spare key, still the same. This time shaking the key didn't work. Fluke?

As it was late at night I didn't attempt anything too intrusive. What I did try was:
*Disconnect the battery
*Check connections above the passenger footwell - Mind you I had none of the other associated faults people seem to have with this...
*Swapped some relays round

After some time, I gave it another attempt with the key, more pulling and pushing than shaking. The car tried to start, lights dipped and it made a pathetic attempt to turn over by maybe 1/4 turn and nothing.

I have yet to check the battery voltage as the last attempt to start seemed a bit suspect. Could this be it, or maybe the ignition switch? Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!

Thanks!

Thumbs up

I have confirmed it is the ignition switch.

After a day of reading forums and blogs, there seemed to be a common theme. Hitting the key with a hammer. Well,.it works. Held the key to position III and gave it a few sharp taps with a hammer. Seemed to do the tricks. Started it 8 times, the last 4 times no need to tap it with a hammer.

I have ordered an ignition switch as I simply don't trust it, or the wife with a hammer!
