Our XC70 2015 was doing the same thing when we test drove it. We were told it was a minor issue and would be addressed once the software was updated - it seemed to be fixed so we bought the car. Since then we haven't had this issue but we have had the intermittent problem of the gears getting stuck in first for about 50 yards if revved hard on takeoff. We've had it back to the dealer a few times but the dealer can't reproduce the issue and so can't fix it. Our warranty runs out in January and volvo has said that the issue won't be covered because the problem hasn't been identified.

Auto boxes are expensive things to repair, so you really need to force the issue one way or another.

yet another update.... dealer due to have car back in for a week (!) in order to connect it up to some sort of diagnostic internet link thing to volvo sweden for their tech guys to " try a few things". I think the only thing being tried is my patience!
At what point do I get stroppy and get Volvo Uk customer services involved... or is that unlikely to produce any tangible results?

We didn't have any success bringing in Volvo customer service. They told us they won't get involved in dealings between repairers and customers. They said they rang the dealer but that didn't achieve anything. We ended up going to another dealer for different reasons, but still have the issue.

Since September there is a new fix for this which your dealer should know about , it is an internal repair so they have to take the gearbox out and the front clutch and replace some circular seals . So best get back to them promptly !
